The Importance Of Writing In High School Writing

As a freshman in college, I was very nervous for multiple reasons such as keeping my grades up, making new friends, and ultimately figuring out who I was going to become. However, the idea that scared me the most was having to write these long and complicated essays I had always heard other college students talk about. In high school writing was not really stressed; therefore, I felt quite unprepared and afraid to attempt a college level English course. As I walked into my freshman, fall semester English class I remember thinking “okay, these people don’t look like geniuses either, so I can do this.” Then came our first major writing assignment and I didn’t really believe it to be extremely complicated. However, after turning in my paper and then being told to rewrite it, all those nervous feelings returned. I was so irritated to have to rewrite the essay on a different topic after I had just spent so much effort and time on my original essay. Yet, now looking back I feel extremely lucky that my teacher cared enough and made me rewrite my essay. Rewriting this first assignment was a major turning point in my writing career. I actually was starting to understand the process of mapping out an essay and learning that an essay doesn’t just happen. I learned that brainstorming and creating unique maps or charts helped me to focus and group my different ideas together, instead of presenting them scattered all over the place. However, even though I started to feel more comfortable with my flow of writing and grammar techniques, such as where to put comas; there was still one thing I had not quite mastered. Quotations and citing sources is something that always caused me so much anxiety. I had no idea of where to place this quotes or exactly how they should be presented in my essays. Thankfully, my English course during my spring semester helped me with this
