Commentary On The Movie 'Risen'

I had the opportunity to watch the movie “Risen” during Fall Break for extra credit. The movie is about a Roman military guard named Clavius who remains set in his ways after serving in the army. He arrives at a crossroad when he 's tasked is to investigate the mystery of what happened to Jesus following the aftermath of the Crucifixion. Throughout his journey, Clavius discovers the truth that he 's been seeking. It was a very interesting movie because it was from Clavius’ perspective and it showed the aftermath of the crucifixion. Of the four portraits of Pilot presented in the four gospels, which gospels appears to be closes to Pilot is the Gospel of Matthew because he is no more than the necessary Roman authority for allowing the crucifixion …show more content…
The first statement that I think that is significant is when Clavius states “He said it is finished?” “Let’s see if it is finished.” Then one of the other Roman guards says “This man is innocent”. I think this is important because it showed that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life and that the one Roman guard finally realized who Jesus was and what He did to save us from our sins. I think it is very powerful because it shows when you understand Jesus, you begin to realize the love, faith, and hope He provides for the sinful people of the word. The second statement that I think that is significant is when Pilot says “It is as if he wanted to be sacrificed”. I think this is important because Pilot realized that Jesus was dying on the cross for a reason. However, Pilot did not fully understand the concept of the Crucifixion. It also shows that Jesus willingly gave His life up for you and me. The third statement that I think that is significant is when Clavius asks “Did you find the Nazareth different?”. I think this is important because it showed that Clavius was beginning to understand that Jesus was special, but he did fully understand what the purpose and meaning of Jesus was. I think Clavius thought that the Jesus was a cult or a religion and he did not realize Jesus was about love and forgiveness. I also found a fourth statement that I think that is significant is when Mary Magdalen told Clavius, “You look for the wrong thing”. I think it is important because many people spend their lives like Clavius looking for love in all the wrong place. For example, people try to find love in purpose and meaning in money, power, relationships, sex, position, possessions or hobbies. I think it is important to realize that the purpose and meaning of love can only be found in Jesus
