Around 600 AD, a new monotheistic religion began called Islam. Islam was founded by the prophet Muhammad in the Arabian city of Mecca. Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 AD into a poor clan; he was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his grandparents. His followers, called Muslims, spread Islam throughout the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe. By 750 AD, Muslim leaders had built an empire. Muslim scholars focused on learning and developed numerous cultural achievements that are still used today; they also connected diverse people through religion and trade. Today, Islam is the worlds fastest growing religion with more that one billion followers throughout the world. Some people were attracted to Islam, but many people feared Muhammad’s growing popularity and that Mecca would loose its status as a holy city. Then after years of attacks from the people that were against Muhammad and his teachings, Muhammad and his followers fled to Medina. This migration was known as the Hirajh. When they got to medina, Muhammad began to gain new converts that put Islam above their families and their clans. He began to teach the people to have respect for the Quran, and for Christians and Jews. Then in 630 AD when Muhammad had followers they returned to Mecca and conquered the city. He destroyed all the statues of the different Gods in the Ka’aba, leaving only the statue of Allah. After everything that had happened the people of Mecca began to convert to Islam. Then in 632 AD Muhammad died and the Islamic leaders began to create an empire. Within the empire they had many well trained people that began to conquer nearby regions.
