“Martyrs were men and women whom the Roman authorities executed for persisting in their Christian beliefs instead of submitting to the emperor worships” (textbook pg 269). As mentioned earlier, one of the very first Martyrs were the twelve Scillitan martyrs that was executed. Another example of martyrdom was the story of Vibia Perpetua. She was a mother in her twenties that refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods, and she was “condemned to face wild beasts in the amphitheater of Carthage's” textbook pg 269). Lastly, was the story of Constantine. He was from a class of professional soldiers whose carrier took them far from the Mediterranean. Constantine was known for his dream that he had before his battle at the strategic bridge in 312 CE. He dreamt of an emblem bearing the words “In this sign conquer” which “he placed on his soldiers’ shield was the “first two letters of the Greek Christos, a title for Jesus” (textbook pg 272).
