Achilles is one of the greatest warriors of Greek mythology. The myths state that Achilles was extremely brave, handsome and honorable. Although he was amazingly strong, he had one physical weakness–his “Achilles heel.” Throughout the course of his life, Achilles is bothered about his destiny, which is to die a great warrior. According to the gods, he is to live a short, but glorious life. Contemplating whether or not he should die for the war is a part of Achilles internal struggles.

Achilles is very protective of his friend. He was also deeply loyal and would sacrifice anything for his friends and family. During this point of Achilles life he shows more of his humble side than in the later part of his life.
When the Greek army came to recruit Achilles, his mother begged him not to go to war. The gods had warned her that he would live a short but glorious life if he went away to fight in Troy. Despite his mother’s efforts, Achilles was finally tricked into following King Odysseus. Odysseus was also a well-known Greek warrior. Although Achilles wanted to appease his mother, he also could not avoid his destiny. Achilles continually struggles with his personal desires and his fate throughout his life.
At a young age Achilles was appointed an admiral by Agamemnon because he had proven to be a great leader. From very early in the war, Achilles was recognized as a famous warrior.
