The year was 1997. Rip Van Winkle is lying in bed and dreading going to work. Rip was pay phone technician with Bellsouth. He was rather lazy so this job suited him perfectly. All he had to do was drive around and repair pay phones and collect the money. Rip had been married for fifteen years. During these fifteen years, he had been bossed around daily by his wife. Today wasn’t any different. His wife, Dame Van Winkle, stormed into the bedroom and demanded that he get up. Rip replied to her in his usual way. He shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, cast up his eyes, and said nothing. The couple had a five-year-old son named Rip Jr. Rip Jr. was the only reason he stayed with his wife. Then he spotted the Daily Times newspaper. He was shocked to see on the front page that Donald Trump was president. He thought to himself, “Why is a business tycoon like Donald Trump president? And what in the world happened to Bill Clinton.” He walked outside to clear his head. Rip looked up and seen that gas was $2.40 a gallon. He was there yesterday and gas prices were $1.22 a gallon. How could this be? Rip went back in the store and asked the clerk if he could use the phone. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a public phone for him to use. However, a woman behind him let him use her phone that was in her purse. Rip was confused as to how to work the contraption she called an iPhone, but he asked the clerk for Brom Dutcher’s phone number. A man at the end of the line couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. He told Rip that Brom Dutcher had died in combat in Iraq. He was stunned at the loss of his friend. He didn’t even know there was a war going on. The man stared at Rip with a curious expression. He asked, “Sir, what is your name?” He replied, “Rip Van
