Rip Van Winkle And The American Romanticism

The term romanticism is defined in so many other ways by scholars and poets. Romanticism was a literally movement revolted against the ideologues of classism, order, reason and coherence that led the literature from mid 1600 throughout the enlightenment in the 1700. The enlightenment was the time that the thought of writers, philosophers and research were taken seriously and in consideration. The American romanticism was a huge movement in America. It started in 1820 and ended in 1860. This movement was definitely influenced by British romanticism. In the American romanticism there is the light romanticism and the gothic romanticism. It was full of characteristics of romanticism but it was dominated by two which were nature and supernatural. Nature played a huge role in this story, this excerpt show what was said before "They (The Kaatskill Mountains are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country (lrving Pg.7). The river and the mountain provide the best civilization for a modern American fairytale. Supernatural was also one of the most important element in the story. It is shown in this quotation “…They maintained the gravest faces, the most mysterious silence; and they were, withal, the most melancholy party of pleasure he had ever witnessed. Nothing interrupted the stillness of the scene but the noise of the balls, which, whenever they were rolled, echoed along the mountains like rolling peals of thunder.” The title character was walking and saw something very strange which was men dressed in antiquated traditional Dutch attire. They were playing and he find them very mysterious. They were sitting in silence enjoying themselves playing bowling. supernatural elements were very connected with
