The Riot Girrrl movement was initially focused on feminist values and the equal treatment of woman in modern society. The original scope of the movement changed throughout the growth of Bikini Kill as they began to lay focus on other political issues of the time such as mass shootings, racism, and same sex relationships. The lyrics of Bikini Kill would make an average woman feel confused or potentially upset initially, but upon further listening one could realize the band was trying to recreate the anger and frustration of a woman living in a male dominated world. The style of music played by the bands of the Riot Girrrl movement would empower and potentially inspire young woman as they are preforming in a genre that is in direct opposition to what a woman is ‘expected’ to play in. The Punk Singer left me with mixed emotions as to what I should take from it. The documentary has many positive things going for it, such as modern interviews of woman who Bikini Kill continues to inspire. The film is also successful in capturing the full story of Kathleen including the present day, this is very unique as many music documentaries tend to focus on when the group is at their peak (single tour). The film is not without its faults. A prime example of this is the lack of male interviews conducted, one of these few male interviews is from her husband. The film also presents the audience with a strong anti-male vibe at times. The documentary also failed to feature music critics and their opinions of the impact and quality of music Bikini Kill had at the time, instead we are presented with the opinions of friends and fans of Kathleen. The final opinion I have for the documentary is that it does a great job in capturing the modern feminist movement strictly from the point of supporters of feminism. I would have enjoyed the documentary more if it had contained a less biased set of interviews and focused less on politics and struggle and more on the
