In the short story, ”Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, the theme is the idea of good versus evil. Theme is the central message of a story, or a general statement about human beings or life. A story without a theme is like a game without rules, it has no purpose. Theme is what gives a story meaning and impacts the reader, bringing about a better understanding of the story. In the theme, the protagonist of this story, Rikki-tikki, is the example of good. The antagonists of this story is the gruesome cobra family who represent the idea of evil. In the rising action of the story Naginia says to Nag, “Go in quietly, and remember that the big man who killed Karet is the first one to bite.” Nagaina persuades her husband to go in and kill the people for her while she does nothing. Nagaina is also very threatening. She threatens to murder the people, ”stay still, I am not ready yet. Wait a little keep very still, all you three. If you move I strike, and if you don’t move I strike, Oh, foolish people who killed my Nag!” Nagaina is a horrible, selfish, and evil character in this story There is another possible theme which is, if you do something bad to someone else it will come back to haunt you. This is shown when the cobras ate tiny birds out of a nest, and at the end of the story all of the cobras end up dead. At the end of the story, “all of the cobras are dead.” Because the cobras ate little birds out of a nest and did other cruel things, the result was they all died by the end of the story. Even though I can see that if you do something bad to someone else it will come back to haunt you is a possible theme, good versus evil is still the main
