In every short story, there is always a theme. Theme is the central message in a literary work. A theme can usually be expressed as a generalization, or a general statement, about humans beings or about life. In “Rikki-tikki-tavi”, I chose the theme good versus evil. Rikki as you know, is the superb character who tries to protect Teddy, Teddy’s family, and the garden birds Darzee and his wife from the family of snakes. The antagonists are representing evil Nag and Nagaina. They’re two Indian Cobras who are as big as a six foot man, who want to kill the family and Rikki, so they can rule the garden with their family once their eggs hatch. The protagonist protects Teddy and his family from the family of snakes. Wapp! thats the sound of Rikki lunging himself onto Karit so he can try to kill him so he can protect the family from him. “Teddy is safer with that little beast than if he had a bloodhound to watch him” is what Teddy’s father says after Rikki killed Karait, a minor snake, that tried to attack Teddy. This is how we know Rikki is protective of the family. Also, Rikki is very courageous for taking on the two black Indian Cobras to protect a family that saved his life. My alternate claim helps me prove the theme is good versus evil. Rikki is the good character who fights the hateful, mean snakes: Karait, Nag, and Nagaina. Mr. Rudyard Kipling used the theme good versus evil to help us learn about life and how it’s not always going to be easy. When we protect others, show bravery, and loyalty it makes life easier for others by making it so they don’t have to be concerned about something happening to them. If we are threatening others that makes life a lot harder because they have to be concerned about something. It’s making someone or something’s life harder because they could get hurt or killed. In the end, the theme is clearly good versus evil and can sometimes make life harder for others and not just
