It is fascinating to watch what happens when people can become convinced they are right, even when they are wrong. The video documentary, Right Between Your Ears, explores how people from different walks of life came to the extraordinary belief that the world would end on a given date, took a public stand for it, and how they coped when nothing happened. Those included were a stock trader with a young family, a philosophy student about to graduate, and a retail manager. This documentary is not just about their beliefs but a story of how we believe. Neuroscience and social psychologists are also included and give insight on our curious relationship to being right and being wrong.

Starting off with the movie that we watched in class “Straight Laced” I thought that was a very interesting movie and something that gave me personally a lot of perspective and sort of opened my eyes a little bit. Because I am from a big city (washington Dc), I am used to being around people who are openly gay or openly transgender. But it really made me think about my high school. Illustrating the complexities of interpersonal relationships, the XX released their self titled freshman album to critical acclaim. Among the songs on the album, “Islands” best demonstrates the complexities of interpersonal relationships owing to its lyricism, both minimalistic and introspective. Two lovers declare loyalty to each other while recognizing the sacrifices they are making; they are reluctant to let go of the freedom they cherish but feel preconditioned to be together. Much of this story lacking in the lyrics of the song but is portrayed using other means. Through the use of cinematography an element of expression is depicted that would not otherwise be possible through melodic and lyrical depiction alone.…
