Teamwork is dangerous, or at least it is in Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus. Spartacus takes us to first century rome, where a former slave has started an uprising after killing one of the trainers watching and keeping guard over the soon to be gladiators. Spartacus is an interesting movie, because it shows how bravery and relentlessness can spark hope and community within strangers and acquaintances. What we make of life in the time we have is the idea that David Fincher presents in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He shows a character that is different because he experiences life backwards, however he enjoys life and meets new friends and emotions. This is in direct contrast to the portrayal of Benjamin by Francis Scott Fitzgerald who shows a character who is not accepted into society because he is different and thus he lives out his life alone. The idea that you live life essentially alone, if you are different, is more effective in engaging the reader and creating a thoughtful response from an audience who connect to the basis of…

Based off the novel written by Howard Fast, the movie “Spartacus” is an incredible drama that brings to life the legacy of Spartacus, a slave who rises above the rest, leading his companions in a major uprising against the Roman Republic. This film was released in 1960, right in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement which occurred from 1954 to 1968. Although not extremely obvious at first glance, there were some political influence in the making of this film since author Howard Fast and screen writer, Dalton Trumbo, are both a part of the Hollywood blacklist. If Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) in North by Northwest is noted for his boldness and nonchalance combined with personal charm, Manny Balestrero (Henry Fonda) in The Wrong Man for his humility, calm and composure, then Grace Kelley can be seen as an embodiment of pluck courage and self-confidence at its heroic heights. America is well known for its plucky courage and mettle/fortitude they displayed during the two world wars. Hitchcock could well appreciate it living in Hollywood as a British citizen having his roots in Britain. Hollywood films have exhibited this bravado time and again while projecting the American characters as part of the myth making structure. Persepolis, the movie, is more effective than Persepolis, the graphic novel, in enlightening a 21st – century, post 9/11 Wester audience “that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremist” by utilizing dynamic features to create a connection between the audience and characters to highlight character individuality. Visual aspects, more specifically on-screen emotions, along with the presence of sound create a dynamic feeling for the audience, while the book’s panels tend to be more stagnant. This dynamic feeling, I believe, aids an audience in connecting with characters’ emotions, creating a sense of intimacy as the audience feels what the character feels. For example, during the torture scene I was able to see…
