Ridgeology, Edgeoscopy, and Poroscopy After more than thirty years of law enforcement service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, David R. Ashbaugh focused his research and expertise on the science of ridgeology (Encyclopedia.com, 2005). Ridgeology refers to the method of evaluating friction ridge skin, as a means of identification, based on scientific principals and procedures. Ridgeology differs from Dactyloscopy as it is the forensic examination of all friction ridge skin, or volar pads, and is not limited to just ridges of the finger tips. Because of ridgeology, forensic identification has become more dynamic as scientists are acknowledging friction ridge skin on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and toes is just as telling as the uniqueness of fingerprints from person to person. Chatterjee observed that the edge shapes of friction ridges are produced by differential growth and sometimes a shape is caused by a pore located near the edge or between two pore locations opening into a furrow from the ridge (Holder, Robinson & Laub, 2011). Much like poroscopy, comparing such fine details that lie within friction ridge skin further solidifies uniqueness between individuals, although capturing clear ridge detail is just as essential for successfully applying edgeoscopy methodology. As technology progresses and automated databases collect clearer prints, the concepts of poroscopy and edgeology are likely to become more widely practiced, rather than accepted
