Chico & Rita was released into theatres November 10th, 2010. This is a dazzling love story that began in Havana, Cuba, and ended on American soil; however, it is the journey as a whole that should be admired, not simply the end. Their love story is like no other, and yet it strikes a familiar tone that resonates with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as they [Chico & Rita] too are portrayed as a pair of star crossed lovers. They are both musicians; he was a pianist and songwriter, while she was a captivating jazz siren. They quickly fall in love, and just as quickly apart, then reunite, fight, love, and it continues in what seems like an endless cycle until the bittersweet end. Directed by three great Spanish men, Tono Errando, Javier Mariscal, and Fernando Trueba, they orchestrated a wonderful film that shares a bit about Cuba and its culture through Chico and Rita’s relationship with Eman Xor Ona as Chico, and Limara Meneses as Rita. This Spanish production did a marvelous job recreating Havana, as well as New York, Paris, and Las Vegas, whilst creating a lovely Cuban filled romance that spanned over almost five decades.
