Rick Rescorla worked in the Twin Towers as the head of security for financial behemoth Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. He knew the importance of drills and he was known to conduct them. Even though he got many complaints from those whom he watched over and made participate in the drills, he never had a second thought. Even though this seems like a small task, on September 11, 2001, he saved the lives of all he watched over except 13, including himself. Even though the Port Authority told everyone to stay put after the first tower was hit, he still evacuated, all the while singing songs from his war days to keep the employees of Morgan Stanley calm. He was a selfless man, and he was last seen going back upstairs to rescue more people. First, lots of people freeze up in a disaster, mostly because of fear. Don’t do that! I know it is hard, but don’t. In an article describing what different people do in different cases, it said, “The bigger problem is that people do too little, too slowly. They sometimes shut down completely, falling into a stupor.”(Ripley, 5) I am not saying to panic, I am simply saying, don’t freeze up. If you freeze, you may die, and you certainly won’t be able to help anyone, let alone be a hero. Next, help everyone. I don’t care if it is someone you have hated your whole life, help them! In one case, there was a small fire at a restaurant, but the hostesses would only warn the people they had seated, bypassing other tables that weren’t “theirs”. Because of this foolish act, the death rate was high. Lastly, be prepared. Like Rick Rescorla, prepare yourself for a disaster, most of us probably won’t need it, but you never know.
