In “Demonology” by Rick Moody, he uses different motifs of photographs to help give information as well as an emotion for the audience. It first starts out with what seems a regular Halloween night where the kids are all dressed up going house to house followed by their parents. To me, all of these pictures and scenes beside the last one where Moody’s sister suddenly passes away, give more insight on the life that him and his sister had. It feels like it’s an average family during situations like the trick or treating or when the sister is drunk out of her mind. It is all something that people in some way can relate to with their friends, and family. This is something that I can relate to and that’s why I feel that these photographs and descriptions

Dillard uses an image of a clown to state ideas that will become notable later in the essay. In her hotel room outside Yakima, Dillard sees a twisted painting of a clown made of vegetables, in which she describes. Dillard states, “I assume, a great many things I wanted to remember—but I have not forgotten that clown painting or its lunatic setting in the old hotel” (97). This scene anticipates the effect the eclipse will have. The clown is made up of vegetables; it is not what it sounds to be.…

Throughout history, the human species have not always been able to read or write. One thing humans have always understood are pictures. The cavemen painted on walls in order to document and tell the stories of their lives. In the more modern era, books, especially for children, are filled with pictures in order to help convey the ideas of the writer to all who read his books. This idea of pictures to help support book is shown very well in Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco’s book Days of Destruction Days of Revolt.…

In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting two depression era photographs, Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California and Margaret Bourke¬-White’s At the Time of the Louisville Flood. Both tell a story for what was happening in America during the time of the depression, while also telling personal stories. Dorothea Lange’s photograph, Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California, shows a mother with three of her children. You can see the mother is worried and seem to be stressed.…

My first symbol is the books. Maddy has spent all of her life locked in her house and in that time she read a lot. Choosing the books as a symbol shows what Maddy does with her time in the house. Then having my second symbol as the ocean shows where she wants to go. I chose the ocean because throughout the book and her time she spent talking with Olly she always talked about seeing the ocean and traveling.…

When I write,I try to capture in words, the half etched thoughts, the unformed silences ,the vaguely understood swirl of emotions all entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic images that flash and disappear. When I visualize, I try to capture,in images this time, those half etched thoughts, those unformed silences, those vaguely understood swirls of emotions entangled with and undifferentiated from the chaotic words that flash and disappear. An image, that has never been a word before except vaguely, while it was evolving in the mind, or, a word that has been an image only in the same conditions, stands by itself as the first representation of a reality(or fantasy) that has till then seen only the world of the mind from which it evolved. It is individualistic, unique and beyond judgement , like a new born baby.…

Anne Dillard’s “The Death of a Moth” is a representation of her view on death. Dillard puts the reader in her shoes when she explains the settings and events that go on around her. Anne Dillard lived a single life with her two cats which were yellow and black. Dillard first opens the reader to a single crustacean, the spider, which she says is intelligent because he is somehow managing to survive as opposed to the bugs that become trapped in its spider’s web under the toilet. Eventually, Dillard comes across multiple corpses on the floor, however, one particular corpse catches her eye.…

I thought that it connected to my essay because it in my eyes represented me having one foot in the south loop and one foot in my small town. That is why when I put the image in my essay I inserted near the paragraph that talked about my family. After getting some feedback on my multimodal essay, I decided to add a few more pictures as well. To give my essay even more ways to come to life. At the beginning of the story I put a picture of the street outside of my building to represent “the lights that never go to sleep.”…

The dark color used in the artwork help to give the audience an emotional response. Harvey did a good job by using color to describe what kind of person Myra was when she was alive. The intensity of the eyes and the facial expression make the painting look as though she is really there in person looking at you. The materials used is really the most successful part about the painting. If the painting was used with just normal paint of just sketch of her face I don’t think it would have the same affect.…

In the essay “States” After the Last Sky by Edward Said he writes about estranged Palestinians. The essay starts with photos of Palestinians and about their living situations. Palestinians are forcefully removed from their homes “[they] can be moved again,” Said is explaining how some Palestinians do not have a place to call home; Palestine is lost. The way Said uses the word exiled you can say that Said felt like he was uneasy and maybe he identified himself as a part of the Palestinian group. Exile is a physical and emotional experience.…

In John Berger’s book Understanding a Photograph, he argues that there is a distinct discontinuity between an individual viewing a photo, and the actual photo. A picture solely preserves a single moment in time, and while they often act to tell a story, the medium cannot be fully interpreted without knowing the story that surrounds it. Although there is a definite connection between a photograph and the narrative that corresponds with it, the photo is only a visual aid for the story; it does not tell us everything like the written piece does. I agree with Berger’s argument that photographs can shape the written story that is told about a single character through invoking various responses, emotions, feelings, and interpretations between the…
