Richland Community College Reflection

Decent Essays
When I first started Richland Community College, I thought it was going to be a breeze because of it being a community college. From the first week of it though, I realized this is not going to be a walk in the park. I realized I will have to put in extra time to study for tests and writing expansive papers.
After being in Professor Trickel’s class for one semester, I have learned to study beforehand and not leave anything till the last minute, his class has taught me that time management is necessary in order to succeed. The class has also granted me new friends, who have helped me whether it be helping me understand the lesson, or sharing their study methods and materials. I have also learned to write detailed notes that elaborate on every aspect of an event. Also, I have learned to analyze my notes, the text, and the lecture to further understand the events that were going on in that point in history. Professor Trickel’s class has helped me a lot in understanding on how I will survive Richland Community College.

The department has helped me understand events in history, by giving me a good professor. The department has also allowed me to go out of my comfort zone and go and interview someone from the Civil Rights Era. The interview helped open my eyes and see that America has truly changed. Before the interview, I always thought America had not changed from its discriminatory ways, but my interviewee, Mr. Morash, helped bring awareness to the struggles the people of color felt. This realization would have not been possible without the assignment, that the history department had assigned.
So a formal thank you from me to the History Department and Professor Trickel for giving opportunities and information to expand my knowledge in United States

Well it has been almost 4 months that I have been attending Roanoke Valley Early College. I love it here and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t. So far I have learned a lot about school. By taking time to observe my surroundings and everyone around me, I have learned that everyone in high school is not your friend and that I am learning how to sense a bad vibe before I let anyone get too close to me. RVEC is the only school that has taught me that all teachers are not these people that hate their job because the teachers here including the ones I don’t take yet are always showing us that they really want to be there and help us and teach us.…

I remember sitting in class and seeing the pain on Emmet Til's mothers face when she learned that the two men whom had killed her son were allowed to walk free after only an hour of deliberation. It was a period in American history where African Americans had to fight for their right to a better life. The cornerstone honors program provided me with rigorous courses that focused on open discussions and writings. My u.s history honors course consisted of writing essays and reading African American literature where I learned in great detail about the civil rights movement. This impacted me with a greater understanding about the history of our country and issues that gave African American citizens.…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. Don 't get me wrong, this only meant that I had high expectations out of my college education. For some people, this path leads them to great success. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…

With every new class I have ever taken, came new experiences, new knowledge, and self improvement. Which have all made me into a better student and molded me as a person. Not all classes do this to every student it consist of the student’s willingness to learn, and the teacher’s interest in their students learning. In English 1302, I have improved my analyzing skills, my communication skills, and I am working on correct grammar. One of my favorite assignments from this semester that really helped me refresh and improve my analyzing skills was the song/poem essay.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

I take a lot of notes in most of my lectures so when I am studying for an exam I can see what topics the professor focused a lot on. This helps me see what main points I need to study and what minor points I can skim over. I used this skill on my last exam and it helped me get a better grade than I expected. Looking at the test questions for clues helps me understand what the question is focusing on so I can remember the exact topic and hopefully pick the correct answer. I have used this skill throughout high school and even in college.…

I have discovered that history is an active engagement of analytical techniques to generate questions and develop answers, and not about memorization of names, dates, and battles. There is no new information to be gained from that, and while it is important to know, does not contribute actively to the betterment of knowledge about our past. Learning that history is not just a body of material you observe, but a study you engage and do, has been a major change in my view of history that I have gained through this course. Before I began this class, I viewed history as a passive study. I thought all there was to a history courses was memorizing dates, names, battles, and events.…

Now that we are at the end of the Spring 2016 semester, it is time to reflect on the History Department’s exciting year. I don’t normally like to turn my back on people, but I wanted to model the History Student Association’s new t-shirt. Not only do I like the shirt, I believe that our students came up with a wonderful way of describing what it is that we as historians do and are. We are scholars who are “in-betweeners.” “Our minds are in the past, our bodies in the present, and our aspirations in the future.”…

This semester has been a very difficult, stressful, and challenging for me . High School can not compare the amount of stress I had to face in this fall semester at Hostos Community College. However, it is like that with many other students because making a transition is frightening and many of us find a way to run away from it. Everything in life is a challenge and it is scary as well, but for those who want to study it all starts of with college. It took me more than words to actually realize the reality that I am actually living right at this very moment because, I was not expecting so many things to fall apart, but somehow becoming whole again.…
