But James is not always praised and his criticism is often based on two of his policies: the Irish plantation and the reformation of the Scottish Kirk both, some believe, being major factors in the explosion of the Civil War in the 1640s. It is true that if James was a flexible monarch who favored stability he did tried to pass more revolutionary policies. Notably towards James’s other major source of dislike: the Scottish Kirk. If James did not like the English Parliament he was on the other hand very fond of the English Church. It was a Calvinist church supervised by bishops and had the king as the head of the church while in Scotland the Scottish kirk was trying to get rid of bishops and parishes.…

As times change, values and ideas often change as they are invariably shaped by their context. However, some remain constant throughout time and are universal. The 1592 Shakespearean drama Richard III and Al Pacino 's 1995 docu-drama Looking for Richard [LFR] were written four hundred years apart yet both texts address perpetual values and ideas that are common to both eras. Through a simultaneous study of both texts, the responder is able to understand the influence of context on aspects of the human condition such as the adverse effects of lust for power and appearance and reality. Richard III is heavily influenced by Elizabethan principles and in Pacino 's response to the increasingly secular and modern American context he effectively refashions…

Froissart described how ‘King Philip received the young King of England with all honour and dignity’. However, it is unlikely that this was true. In 1327 the English and French were still at war.…

Did Edward the confessor make William the conqueror his heir before his death England has been characterised by not having principles that were clearly established to guide matters related with royal succession. In the Anglo-Saxon era, lack of these principles often made succession matters ambiguous and often bloody, considering that England was enjoying military might, harboured expansionist ambitions and was under constant threat from neighbouring kingdoms such as Normandy. Heirs played a pertinent and pivotal role in ensuring that the royal bloodline of the monarchs was preserved, yet intermarriages and childlessness often complicated the smooth transition of power once a king passed on. However, lack in succession guidelines often fomented rivalry for the throne among the male children in the extended royal family. Usually, a king displayed preference for his preferred successor by allowing eligible male relatives, sons included, to participate in royal charters and gain titles to significant pieces of land in the English kingdom.…
