The world is starving...but not for food In memory of my endeavors in my elementary school years, I reminisce fondly of the summers I would spend alone, sitting at the foot of my bed and reading in absolute silence. My books were what kept me content day to day from sunrise to sundown, flipping the pages without knowing it. My reading interests were that of any first grader, childish books like World Atlas, The Solar System by Alexander Gordon Smith , or The Science Encyclopedia. I would wobble as I brought them over to my little corner. Opening the cover itself was a venture into a mysterious world. I looked intently at the maps of South America and read about World War II and post-classical Asia. I wondered why Jupiter was so angry as …show more content…
Many may rationalize that Richard was fool to place his dignity before financial gain. In fact, many of Richard’s friends at the time condemned him for his pride and tried to instil humility in him so that he could survive into the world that white people created for him. However, Richard’s resilience to this is the perfect example of the hunger of the human soul. Sure, acting in submission and inferiority to white people at the time may have filled Wright’s stomach, but it would have left a gaping hole in his soul. The soul of a human, defined by dignity, a yearning for happiness, and perseverance, is mutual bond amongst all people. We are a species seeking solace. We are starving our souls without realizing it, misguided by the prospect of money and material goods thinking it will equate to happiness. To a certain extent, it is true humans will go to any means to survive. We need money to buy food in order to live. But why do we choose to live? What is the meaning of our lives? Evidently. over thousands of years, humans have defined this meaning under the general idea that we live for the sake of happiness. We try to enjoy life in fear of suffering and death. So, is there any point to life if we don’t enjoy it? Religion aside, wouldn’t death be a quick solution to any suffering we experience in life? We do not know with a hundred percent certainty what comes in death. Whether there is a heaven or not is as …show more content…
We are starving everyday for something that will satisfy us. Often we seek artificial pleasures, money, and luxuries thinking they coincide with what our hungering souls demand. Sometimes they do. However, more than often we overestimate the true value of these materials. This is the conclusion I’ve come to from witnessing our broken world. Life itself is a rollercoaster of ups and downs. We can’t change this. Our souls will forever be starving in the face of what is plentiful. The world shall continue to

In the memoir Black Boy, Richard seems to never understand the true life behind black folks. He struggles through various needs in his early life, but as he gets older he starts to understand why he and other Black people have these needs. Richard talks about how he starts to feel about blacks while he’s in Chicago, “I sensed that Negro life was a sprawling land of unconscious suffering, and there were but few Negroes who knew the meaning of their lives, who could tell their story(267).” This quote alone shows how much Richard has learned as a young black man. Richard is trying to say that Blacks are suffering because they are basically conditioned to suffer the way they do and they don’t even know it.…

The measure of our value is based on material things. Because of this belief that society has engraved in our brains, we all wait for the next best thing to come around. Everyday millions of people around the world suffer in circumstances, in which they could die from lack of proper care and resources. In Famine, Affluence, and Morality, Peter Singer acknowledges this issue facing humanity and argues for the moral obligation to give large amounts of money to those in need. Singer believes that all who are able should be giving up many, if not all of their luxuries to help give the less fortunate their necessities. I will begin by summarizing the argument that Singer dictates in his article and then explain my reasoning for believing his notions to be sound and valid.…

A Response to Question 1, Section 1: The Meaning of Life: Wolf vs. Taylor Both Richard Taylor and Susan Wolf understand the difficulty of answering the question, “What is the meaning of life?” Taylor begins his “The Meaning of Life” by saying that we do not even understand what the question means to then answer it, and Wolf claims in her own “The Meanings of Lives” that the question is embarrassing to ask because, as Taylor asserts, we really do not understand what is being asked here. Taylor proposes, then, the best way to answer this is to ask what makes for a meaningless life, and perhaps from this comparison, we can find some answers to the original question. Wolf appreciates Taylor’s approach as she also adopts his method, and even though…

We are constantly striving to search for the purpose and meaning of the things we do in our everyday lives. I believe we need reason and purpose in order to do anything, just how some need a reason or reasons to keep living, or their lives may become “meaningless”. Everything you do brings meaning, even if it brings you happiness or sadness or even tragic. Either the experience is good or bad, it still has…

However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
