Richard Wright's Black Boy

Black Boy Research Paper During the time Richard Wright was alive there was a lot of racism, segregation, and discrimination. Wright had first hand experiences with these issues and they all took a toll on him when he was a child. These were factors that influenced Wright to make the autobiography titled “Black Boy”. Richard Wright was born after the civil war but before the civil rights movement. If Wright were writing an autobiography titled Black Boy growing up in the United States he would write about increases in police brutality, increases in black on black crimes and black excellence in sports. In “Black Boy”, Richard writes about many issues that were during the Civil Rights movement and in current time Wright would talk about African American struggles that took the world by storm. He would write about how the African Americans are treated in a more unfair way than others especially when police are involved. According to “The other cultural forces behind police brutality” by James Wolcott, the article says “Black Lives Matter was the protest message adopted after the acquittal in 2013 of George Zimmerman in the shooting of the unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. It swelled into a movement as open season seemed to be declared on black males and tragedies multiplied.”. This quotes is talking about how the killing of Trayvon Martin sparked the Black Lives Matter movement and how the number of killings towards black males multiplied and the number of people jailed for these killings is not increasing at the same rate. This is also a topic that would be written about because while trying to prove a point that white police officers are killing a lot of innocent black people, there are also black people that are killing their own kind and making the total number of black people in the United States decrease. It’s about the lack of consequences when black lives are taken at the hands of police.”. Wright would let this be known because he would be able to show the difference between now and back then. Back then there was more lynching and racial killings and the black people in the past did not really kill each other because they were focused on trying to survive. The rate at which black-on-black crimes increased is drastic and this problem has become one of the biggest problems in the country.
