Beginning Years
Richard Speck lived a very damaging life, living with a family can be rough, living with a family of eight children can be even tougher.Not only that but living with a family with seven siblings and having your father passes away at the age of six is even worse.Not only did Richard Speck have to live that life, but he was repeatedly abused from his new stepfather which led to a lot of issues in Specks development age.Where it came from jumping from one bad neighborhood to another. During his time in jail Speck was interviewed. A quote that speck said while he was imprisoned: "If they knew how much fun I was having in here, they'd have to turn me loose”(book) .This is something that I can barely wrap my head around. There was also one interview where Speck mentioned that on the night of the mass murder spree he "had no feelings", but things had changed: "I had no feelings at all that night. They said there was blood all over the place. I can't remember. It felt like nothing ... I'm sorry as hell. For those girls, and for their families, and for me. If I had to do it over again, it would be a simple house burglary”(Book). Showing that Speck is not entirely the neurotic sociopath that he appears to be. It could be possible that Speck had a want from adrenaline. It could be that Speck enjoyed the thrill of killing people, and he will continue killing until his expectations were met ,which was probably why he killed so many,but when Speck was all out of adrenaline there was nothing to fill that void. Instead, he hated the remorse he felt, which lead to his attempted suicide and eventual capture.At that point, Speck believed that he had a reasoning behind his chaotic nature in which he claimed he had the XYY supermale gene. Walters and many others (textbook) .This theory best describes Specks life, Dollars theory states that frustration can lead to different forms of behavior like regression towards others. and more apathetic behavior , which is why Speck felt “nothing” towards the girls that he killed. Dollard explained that”displacement is to the type of violence that is violent on something or someone else who is not the source of the original frustration.” (text book) This frustration could be related to Speck because of his aggression towards his mother for remarrying someone that was so
