Richard Smith attended Ithaca College, in New York, earning his bachelor's degree in Film and Photography studies. He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors and was in the middle of a master’s degree at Ithaca College when he received a job offer he couldn’t turn down.

He spent a year at United Artists Picture Corporation doing advertising, before taking a job as the Director of Audio and Visual Advertising for Universal Studios in Hollywood. After two years with Universal Studios, he became the Creative Director for Columbia Pictures. He only spent a year with them, before opening up his own agency in Hollywood called RASEL.
