Richard Nixon’s high ambitions led to the decision of moving to Washington, D.C., in search of a more paying and gratifying job. He won the republican nomination with little opposition. His adversary was democrat John F. Kennedy, Senator of Massachusetts. Television played a huge role in the 1960 presidential election. Four debates were scheduled between Nixon and Kennedy (Britannica editors). In one televised debate, Nixon was just recovering from the flu and looked tired, pale and sweaty in comparison to Kennedy’s tan, poised and well-rested opponent. Kennedy won the election by the narrowest of margins, only 120,000 votes. Nixon was convinced he had lost because the media favored the more handsome and richer Kennedy over him. In 1961, he wrote the bestselling book, Six Crises. In the book, he documented his political career as a congressman, senator and vice president (Biography editors). He unenthusiastically ran for Governor of California but lost to incumbent Governor Edmund G. Brown by considerable margins.
