Richard Markoff: The Craigslist Killer

In a world where technology has overtaken society, people have found it much easier to commit crimes. We've all heard of websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, and possibly the most talked about for being so dangerous, Craigslist. These are websites where people can interact with one another, but sometimes it may just so happen that you do not know who you're truly talking to. What or who is hiding behind a computer screen on the other side may just be your worst nightmare. Philip Markoff, an aspiring medical student was dubbed the Craigslist killer in 2009 for committing robberies and even killing one of his victims. Cases like these raise questions such as, what drives a person to murder? Maybe he was deranged, or in a state of panic. …show more content…
According to a report on Philip Haynes in the website murderpedia, Markoff's father was a dentist in Syracuse, New York. It would appear as though Markoff was living a privileged life. He was decent looking, and had an excellent education. He attended Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School where he spent his days occupied with several extracurricular activities. Markoff was a part of the school's bowling and golf teams. He was even a part of the youth court, honors society, and history club. After graduating from high school in 2004 he went on to attend SUNY Albany where he was a pre-med student as well as a member of the youth republicans. According to murderpedia, Markoff “ was a second year medical student at Boston University school of medicine at the time of the crimes. He was suspended from the school following the charges against him”. While volunteering at the albany medical center Markoff even met his future fiancee Megan McAllister who would stick by his side until she could not take it anymore. Markoff’s background leaves people puzzled. Why would someone who is on track, and on a path to a successful life, give it all up?

Philip Markoff was accused of committing a total of three crimes in the short span of seven days. All three crimes are very similar in various ways which is what had led investigators to infer that all three crimes were carried out by the same person.
