Introduction
The article "Mental Health vs Mental Disorders” by Richard M. Glass (2010) appears in the Journal of the Medical Association (JAMA), an online academic journal. The author provides an overview of how many different articles about mental health explain how mental disorders are the problem and that mental health is the goal. He describes how the objective for JAMA is to “be of assistance to clinicians and policy makers in helping patients, families, and communities move in that positive direction” (Glass, 2010). Glass’s goal was to explain how there is a shortage of mental health specialists to provide treatments for mental disorders. He mentions a study by Bombardier et al in which pronounces how 559 sequentially hospitalized adults that have traumatic brain injuries and about 53 percent of them met the criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD) at least once during the first year after their injury (Glass, 2010). Identifying the correct cure for MDD is important for future research to improve the process of treatment. Another article he mentions by Hedayati et al along with a few other studies describe how the attendance of a major depressive episode is related with an increased risk of hospitalization and initiation of dialysis in patients with chronic kidney disease mostly not undergoing dialysis (Glass, 2010). It is clear that research on the effectiveness and well-being of treatments for depression is very much needed (Glass, 2010).
