Likewise, Richard Hanna posted his reasoning against the bill shortly after the vote. According to this post, Mr. Hanna doesn’t believe in abortion, yet he believed that defunding Planned Parenthood wouldn’t bring abortions to a halt. Instead, he said that for this to happen, it will take a combination of laws, education and, access to birth control to eradicate the procedure (Why I Voted No on H.R.314, 2015). Congressman Hanna cited many statistics on Planned Parenthood, and said that he stands in support of women’s healthcare, since “if enacted, this legislation would force 2.7 million people to lose their current doctor,” yet he believed that an investigation should take place “to ensure that all medical practices, and procedures within …show more content…
Rep. Lipinski, is a pro-life Democrat, who has a long record of opposing pro-abortion legislation. For instance, he opposed the “Democrats’ health care overhaul” because “its provision banning federal funds for abortions wasn’t strong enough,” despite other conservative Democrats supporting it (Almanac). Consequently, he’s the 5th most conservative Democrat, and out of all the bills that he has cosponsored, including this one, 58% have been introduced by a member of another party. His political ideology is similar to former Speaker John Boehner, as seen below (2015 Report Card - Daniel …show more content…

Also, he holds a master’s degree in divinity and won his race largely because of the vast support of Christians (Almanac). In addition, some of the top industries that contributed to his campaign, like health professionals and insurance companies, most likely influenced his stance on this bill (OpenSecrets.org - James Lankford). Since Lankford has really strong Baptist roots, and because he won his Senate race largely thanks to the support of Christians, it makes sense that he would have supported and introduced this bill. By doing so, he was taking a stand against an act he believes to be wrong, while simultaneously appealing to his constituents and securing his

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state will defund the Planned Parenthood through the Medicaid program. The Health and Human Services of Texas informed the organization of its decision via a letter. The letter to the Planned Parenthood notified it of a series of health violations, that could potentially lead to spread of infectious diseases, as the undercover videos released by Center For Medical Progress (CFMP) showed the fetal body parts handled by the staff and buyers without mandatory precautions. It expressed concern that the clinics were "liable, directly or by affiliation, for a series of serious Medicaid program violations."…

In “The War on Planned Parenthood,” Katrina Heuvel analyzes threats to reproductive health from a Republican-controlled government. Heuvel critiques Congressional leadership for polarizing rhetoric, the numerous committees investigating Planned Parenthood, and the smear campaign against Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards. The organization annually provides cancer screenings, birth control, and STI testing to over 2.7 million Americans (78% of which are low-income), and Heuvel urges readers to fight for reproductive access. The article coherently argues for the preservation of Planned Parenthood, but the use of the Ad Hominem and hasty generalization fallacies undermines the author’s credibility.…

Out of the numerous services that Planned Parenthood offers the public, only three percent of all of their procedures are abortions; meaning that ninety-seven percent of everything they do is basic health care and other medical services. Cecile Richards, the President of Planned Parenthood, lists the statistics in her article, Today, We Fight Back, “every year, 2.7 million people come through the doors of our health centers, a million people participate in our sex education programs, and 60 million people get health information and other resources from us online.” Since the Republicans who drafted this bill often focus on abortion, they completely ignore all of the good that Planned Parenthood does for the community. Getting into doctor’s offices can be incredibly long and hard process, as documented in Cecile Richards’ article; she talks about a woman that she met who, after her husband lost his job, lost their health insurance. After finding a lump on her breast, she only found two clinics that would take her on as a patient, but they had two-month long waiting lists, so she went to Planned Parenthood.…

Despite the attacks on Planned Parenthood, there are still 700 Planned Parenthood health care centers across the country and Planned Parenthood is still working with legislation to introduce bills to expand and protect access to reproductive health care across the country. Alternative Solutions or Policies The anti-abortion debate and attack on reproductive health care rights is concerning to me as a woman, what concerns me the most however is affordability of abortion. The Hyde Amendment passed in 1976 excludes abortion from the comprehensive health care services provided by the federal government through Medicaid to people who are low income. There are currently only 17 out of 50 states that fund abortions for low-income women on same or similar terms as other pregnancy-related and/or general health services.…

We really do not know whether or not the government can actually have the budget to keep the program running. Even if it can the program is dealing with many problems of their own.
