In sixteenth century England, thousands of farmers were now homeless because of the Enclosure Movement. In England farmers worked at communal farms, and switched plots every year so nobody got the “best” land. The landlords who owned the land were looking for more money so they turned to grazing sheep on their land. This meant that the people who had spent generations working on shared farmland, were jobless, and homeless. Now they were leaving for cities in search of jobs, but due to the competitiveness many were forced to become beggars. Two men: Richard Hakluyt, a writer and Reverend Harrison, a local priest both had ideas to change the poor’s and all of England's life. Richard Hakluyt believed that these unwanted men and women, displaced by landlords, wars and other causes could help the british government through colonization of the New World. Currently, Spain held most of the land in the America’s but Hakluyt’s idea of sending the poor over to farm, build and colonize. He said that they could return home twice a year to visit family, and once they start making money they could send money to the English government. The fatal flaw in his plan was money. He proposed a collection made by each church, and given to the poor. Harrison sorted the poor into three groups: poor by weakness, being old, sick or disabled, poor by accident, being laid off or evicted, and poor by choice, being lazy and pretending to be hardworking. The last part of his plan stated that if the poor refused money they are criminals, lazy and enjoy being poor rather than trying to keep their pride in tact. He often talked in a demeaning tone, criticizing the life choices of many poor. Harrison did have a better plan for the poor, but his demeaning tone and punishment for not wanting help, made this plan seem like an

Democracy is a modern idea that has been shaped throughout history by a dissatisfaction in the people with their appointed rulers. Monarchs ruled Europe for centuries before other modes of government were introduced. These rulers often viewed themselves as appointed by God, an idea some of their subjects agreed with, but most ridiculed. This conflicting opinions of the people and the rulers was the focal point of debate between the upper and lower classes. While kings and queens focused on their displaying their power and their divine right, the clergy advocated against the “evils” of the peasant-class, and the poor rallied together to demand the equality they found in Christ to be applied to their rights.…

Richard Hakluyt was a prominent lawyer who wrote about the numerous possibilities of British expansion across the Atlantic. Hakluyt believed colonization would reap massive benefits for England including religious, political, economic, and strategic advances. Stressing the importance of colonization, Hakluyt argued it is best to establish peaceful relations with Americas’ native populations in hopes that they would also benefit from British settlement and the commerce they would bring to the Americas. Although Hakluyt begins his “Inducements” to future colonizers with the promises of planting the seeds of Christianity in the “infidels” and increasing the force of Christians through the glory of God, his main argument transforms into describing…

Historians have established that the ‘Swing Riots’ comprised 1500 disturbances between 1 June 1830 and 3 September 1831, and were characterised by incendiarism and the smashing of threshing machines by agricultural labourers. Macdonald asserted that the threshing machine was a scapegoat for rural resentment of their economic position. The potential threat to their livelihoods was characterised by the threshing machine, a semiotic representation of the declining fortunes of the labour force. This, as a motivation, rings true; this rural unrest was motivated primarily by the labourers ‘degrading dependence on the caprice of employers’ following changes to agricultural and paternalistic practice in the southern and eastern coastal counties during…

At the beginning of the year, many Fed officials, including Chairman Ben Bernanke, thought one of the biggest risks was that the economy might grow stronger than expected. At the time, the Fed's key interest rate was at 5.25%, and the central bank was leaning toward raising it further, rather than easing monetary policy. "My recommendation also is to take no action and to maintain a bias toward further tightening," Bernanke said at the first meeting of the year, noting that inflation risk had picked up and the housing market had shown some improvement after slumping in 2006. "The housing market has looked a bit more solid, and the worst outcomes have been made less likely," he said. At that point, they didn't realize that losses from subprime…
