The Spiritual disciplines helps you obtain spiritual growth which is necessary to cultivate a healthy intimate relationship with God and change our lives. The various disciplines described in the Celebration of Discipline provide instruction on the pathways to attaining healthy spiritual growth resulting in transformation which ultimately leads one to celebration and joy. I never thought of it that way. Although I considered aspects of my spiritual journey requiring some form of discipline I never consider the journey itself being a discipline. I consider myself to be a pretty disciplined person with regard to achieving a particular task or goal or how I live and order my life. In the same manner my desire to obtain a closer more intimate walk with God can be achieved through practicing these spiritual disciplines resulting in change and transformation.
The Spiritual disciplines that most resonated with me were those that Foster describes as the Inward Disciplines. They consist of meditation, prayer, fasting and study. (Foster,pp 13-76). I felt more comfortable with this one because I believed they were practices I have done and am more familiar with. After reading about them; however, I was humbled at actually how very little I actually did know about them as a discipline. When I considered where these practices existed in my walk with the Lord I had to admit how poorly I was actually practicing any of them.
