Richard Foreman Richard Foreman was born on June 10th 1937 in New York City. Richard Foreman is an American playwright, artistic director and avant-garde pioneer. Foreman is considered be one of the most influential figures in American Drama and is known as the “Godfather” of the American Avant-Garde. Foreman creates works in the Avant-Garde performance movement, now largely known to post-dramatic theater. Foreman went to school at Brown University and became interested in film and playwriting; afterwards he went on to receive his MFA at Yale University. His inspiration of doing an avant-garde style of theatre was influenced by the writer Jose Ortega Y Gasset who influenced him to have a rigorous style. In the earlier stages of his career Richard focused more on film but eventually his interest shifted to theatre. Over the course of 42 years of his career he has directed, designed and written over fifty of his plays, five of which have won the OBIE awards as the best play of the year and has five other OBIE awards for directing. The plays background included existential and metaphysical acrobatics. The set design included clocks, chandeliers, cabinets, two imitation rowboats, a bloody towel, a white spider with spots, an oversized golf ball plus snake and mouth plug and an interspecies golf with a Giant Duck. Richard wanted the actors to reflect on the set and have their own personal relationship between all of their characters. Idiot Savant, was a well-reviewed production starring Willem Dafoe that was supposed to be Mr. Foreman’s last theatre show. For a few years, he directed his attention to the film industry and produced the 2012 film Once Every Day. He made a comeback to the theatre in 2009 when he collaborated with John Zorn in Astronome: A Night of the
