Every life is distinct. In our lives, we go through different stages, stages that help us to define ourselves and our purposes. From birth to death, we go through stages like contemporary conceptions of childhood, adolescence, independence, maturity, and old age. First poem can symbolize any race of young men in America. The poem allows the reader to imagine beyond the word the author used to describe the seven pool players and the inevitable course of events leading to their dark and tragic future. And the second poem “Richard Cory” An extremely wealthy man who was admired and envied by those who knew him little and consider themselves less fortunate, commits suicide. Firstly, both poets use symbolism to represent the cycle of human life. In the first poem “We Cool” written by Gwendolyn Brooks the stage of childhood and teenage years are examined. The poem is about young, reckless teenage boys who always keep trying to live life to the fullest. They have no cares about the world and the consequences of their actions, the only thing they care about is to have fun. The second poem “Richard Cory” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson is about a man which is in society’s eyes a perfect man. He is wealthy, established and good looking person who have achieved most of the things in his life. The teenage boys in the poem drink, party, and sing. They’re optimistic about the future ahead of them and see no faults to their lifestyles and actions. The poem discusses how the teenage boys go from being reckless and carefree to see their own responsibilities and the faults to their actions, this is what the author refers to “we’ll die soon”. The death in the poem is referred to the responsibilities that await the boys, the responsibilities that come with growing up. Likewise, Cory has lost his way …show more content…
Brooks has described this poem writing less descriptive words but using a modern English language and her choice of slang word to create some jazz mood. Her selection of words is out of the chart and only using one syllabus to create that hip-hop tune. In the article, “Rhythm in Gwendolyn Brooks’ WE REAL COOL” the author claims that “Students who first encounter “We Real Cool” often respond to the unique musicality of the poem. As several critics, have noted, many students describe the lines as specifically following a hip-hop metrical structure” (Koch 28). Her rhyming word that repeats together adds some sort of harmony together. For an example, cool/school, sin/gin, and it highlights each word. On the other hand, Robinson uses the rhyme scheme in the poem which is ABAB and consists of 4 stanzas. In the first stanza, where town and crown rhymes and so as him and slim. While reading the poem, the reader can assume he is a rich and wealthy man. But at the end, he killed himself. It conveys that everybody’s life is different, and you cannot assume just looking at how they look from outside. Both the poems, evoke emotions of childish and matured nature. The poets in both the poems express mutual label of human behavior both social and physical just varying on age differences and period of human lives.
