When searching for whole grain rice and reading the labels for fiber content, I realized that fiber is much higher in brown rice compared to white rice in which my family consumes almost every day of our lives. Besides eating white rice as a traditional practice, I concluded that my parents must have chosen to eat white rice due to higher shelf life, since we usually buy up to 30 bags (25 lb. each) every week for the family and the restaurant. Brown rice has a lower shelf life so it will not benefit much for the family business. If I do convince my family to add brown rice into our diet to increase fiber consumption, we will have to take into consideration of the length of the rice kernel, long or short, as well as the cooking time and the result of the rice.
