Ricardo Sanchez's Poetry

Improved Essays
“Old Man” by Ricardo Sanchez and “For My Sister Molly Who in the Fifties” by Alice Walker are lyric poems. In both poems, there are similarities and differences with the theme and mood. In “Old Man” the theme is that legacies are remembered forever when stories are passed on. Sanchez writes, “old man,/ grandfather,/ wise with time/ running rivulets on face,/ deep, rich furrows,/ each one a legacy.” (lines 7-12) and “but your reality, old man, lives on/ in a mindsoul touched by you…” (lines 46-47). This emphasizes the theme because “reality” refers to the old man’s stories and that the speaker will remember the old man’s past stories and that the old man’s stories will be passed through generations. His spirit and heritage will live on as long

With the passing of time, memory can magnify and distort what is important to an individual's life. In Gwen Harwood’s poetry, Harwood portrays these aspects through her poem, ‘The Violets’ and ‘Father and Child.’ The poems both represent time and memory in different ways which gives the audience an impression that everyone is different and memories all differ from person to person. It also shows that the lessons we learn from the past differ and are sometimes false memories. As time passes an individual’s memories becomes distorted and sooner or later an individual will only remember what was significant about the memory.…

The now gone Carlos was for me a brother, more than that a twin. Even more than that we were a cell floating in space that was separated a day of October. The first example which shows this is how both characters in both poems began losing their formers lives is the usage of descriptive imagery that is told. For example in America in the first stanza: “Mama never knew what to make of the monthly five pound jars handed out by the immigration department until my friend Jeff mentioned Jelly”. While in Elders at the Falls “They stood there just above the river all the long day with their backs turned”. Both poems show right in the beginning how each of these characters are going through a change that is unwanted to them. The family in America is experiencing learning another country's ways and culture and getting adapted to them.…

Rob Baker’s Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as a Lifesaver (Baker 858), writes an interesting story of Chicano poet Jimmy Santiago Baca (who goes by Baca in the story), and the amazing account of a young man’s start at life at the very bottom of society’s ladder, through his many trials and tribulations throughout childhood to his inevitable incarceration in the state’s prison system. Baker takes it one step further in his story as he provides a glimpse of not only the hell this young man must endure while in prison but the chance meeting of an author working through a church outreach program for inmates that forever changed his life. The message of the story to me is that everyone has value and a voice. A person, such as Baca in this story,…

It Just Wasn’t Meant to Be Many times in life, people are subjected to be overcome with greed. It is too often that we witness people spending money they don’t have in pursuit of impressing people they often don’t even like. Ultimately it seems the vicious circle ends in regret and self-loathing. This seems to be a pressing theme presented in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby and in Scott Fitzgerald’s Babylon Revisited. Charlie and Jay Gatsby share many similarities throughout their stories.…

Coming to a Realization The best poems always bring up the good old times and past lovers. Artists often intertwine the two concepts in order to form beautiful narratives and thought provoking images. This is precisely what John Hollander has done with his poem, “An Old-Fashioned Song.” Throughout the 21-line poem, Hollander takes the reader on a melancholy trip that begins as a sad realization that there are no more walks through the woods, to a nostalgic story about a magical relationship between two young lovers that ended in tragic way. The poem makes use of unique and intentional literary skills, such as structure, tone, and choice words, in order to tell the story of a sad man who lost his lover and reminds himself of it by walking in…

Ignoring the fact that money is important, Walker refers to it as “bits of paper” which juxtaposes the idea before hand, completely downgrading it to the status of scrap paper. This can be seen as irony and contrasting the two ideas. As further she describes her father such as his “dancing in a yoga meditation”, the speaker concludes that she wishes her father to be proud of her achievements she have made without him, when she says, “he would have grown to admire the woman I’ve become”. The two poems may have similarities being that they both concentrate on remembering a family member, they may have differences; for instance, ‘Poem at Thirty-Nine’ chooses to bring her back to her childhood whereas ‘Piano’ does not choose to remember but is made to remember against his own will. Lawrence gives signs of sadness whilst Walker refers her memories to…
