Ricardo Falcon left Fort Lupton to attend a meeting in El Paso, Texas on Aug 30, 1972 in which is well known as Labor Day weekend. On their trip, the two-car caravan that Ricardo and his fellow associate was in separated near Alamogordo, New Mexico. During this time he stopped to attempt cool down his car in Orogrande, New Mexico, with water at a gas station being quickly denied the water by the gas station owner Perry Brunson because water was considered too expensive and that it would be a “waste”. This frustrated Ricardo Falcon and followed Perry Brunson into his office in which he was shot twice in the chest after Ricardo and Perry got into an argument. Ricardo was shot at four times with two hits hitting him by a .38-Caliber police special pistol. His fellow associate, Florenco Grando didn’t get ahold of the pistol after wrestling Brunson however, he did notice that Ricardo Falcon was bleeding on the ground laying down on his stomach. While Florenco was examining Ricardo, Perry Brunson had called the police at (4:17 p.m.) and arrived thirteen minutes later (4:20 p.m.) the second police car showed up (4:25) nineteen minutes later with the ambulance arriving forty three minutes later (5:00 p.m.). Ricardo Falcon was a college student and was considered a leader by many Chicano activist leaders. Stan Perea an executive director of the Association for Hispanic Theological Education said “Falcon was a visionary who dared to denounce racism in the United States and slammed it as something odious, sinful and damaging to the nation”, told Efe. Ricardo was well known in the UMAS and in areas of northeastern Colorado. Ricardo’s speeches was the reason why he was well known because he gave these speeches across the entire state.
