Ribs- Sparta was dominated by male citizens and the most powerful of those that came from a select group of families. These were the landed aristocracy, and following reforms credited to Lycurgus in the 6th century BCE (or even earlier), citizens could not indulge in agricultural activities - this was the lot of the helots. Helots could not own property and so could not rise to become full citizens. Women in Sparta had a better life than in other Greek city-states. In Sparta they could own property which they often gained through dowries and inheritances.…
Within Sonny’s Blues, James Baldwin explores the narrator’s obsession with his other people’s suffering and how this consumes his life to the extent that he can no longer perceive his own struggle. In this way, Baldwin suggests that life’s greatest suffering is an inability to understand the sorrow of a loved one. When the narrator is first introduced to the audience, he is a man burdened by responsibility and his own heavy subconscious. As his mind wanders after he learns about Sonny’s arrest, his dark thoughts and grim outlook represent how he has both suffered himself, and watched his friends suffer as “…their heads bumped abruptly against the low ceiling of their actual possibilities.”…
Some people never break a bone, but other people have broken bones before. Some people might break one in their lifetime or break many. I know some friends that have broken bones, and they broke the bone by messing around. My brother has also broke his bone by trying to do the monkey bars at school, and he slipped and fell. I broke my arm when I was four years old.…
When people are unable to cope both physically and mentally, they cannot battle against the bullies of their society, which causes them to fall weak and to give up. This can have a long term affect, as many people will think they are inadequate to do certain things, which is why they are forced to do things they obviously cannot do. This is usually done to make fun of them in front of the society.. This portrays that teenagers want acceptance from their groups, therefore they will obey them. A quotation to emphasise my point is: “I mean he is laughing as well, see how far he’ll go...…
Cues can often signal the approach of something important in literature. On certain occasions, the cues may be obvious, but more often than not they only truly manifest once the reader gains a full understanding of the text. “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin is a dynamic short story that encompasses both the lifestyle of the African American community within the time period and the development of jazz music as a form of self-expression. Despite having two dynamic main characters the plot moves forward with fluidity. This is mostly due to Baldwin’s use of ongoing themes such as loss of innocence, suffering and self-discovery that manifest in both of the leading characters.…
Have you ever had déjà vu? If you have not the feeling can be quite uncomfortable at times. The feeling of reliving a moment or even a day that you had either dreamt of or actually experienced step by step previously. Well, Marshall Mathers III, also known as Eminem, captures one intense and eerie déjà vu moment while giving his readers a vivid picture of his frightening relapse. Marshall expresses the fear, confusion, anger and mental instability of a haunting drug addiction.…
The reference to hooks conjures feelings of entrapment which operate in contrast to the lack of control the reader is feeling. The blood mouthfuls provide further links back to death as the overarching theme as the morbid imagery creates a link to the loss of blood. The poem’s links to death and suicide are debated further as many believe that the death in the poem represents the death of a less confident speaker. This can be seen with speaker saying “I unpeel” which could represent the rebirth of a new speaker. The quotation “Suicidal, at one with the drive into the red” could represent the death of the old speaker and the birth of a new personality.…

After viewing the short film “Our time is up” by Rob Pearlstein, I was able to place the five components of the plot structure diagram as presented in theatre class. The five plot structure is, exposition, inciting event, raising event, climax, and falling action. The exposition is the beginning of the plot, it sets the foundational background of the main character or the story. At the opening of the story, you see a time clock set, an immaculate environment where everything is not just clean but ordered.…
Silence There is nothing left but the silence burning through the your flesh – eyes, singed and wet with unending streams – the moon has set and the sun won’t rise tomorrow – running away from you, keeping its distance far and beyond your reach – you’re worthless even to nature, cowering beneath the remnants of a past desperate still to leave you behind – the silence grows louder, stronger, branding your lungs – “undeclared” – your stomach whispers to you as you sleep, the grumbling void of dissatisfaction – your nails chip away at the keyboard – tap, tap, tap as your pockets run dry and your hair falls out – another cup – another hour – another twitch of the finger, not enough to end the SILENCE that grows far beyond the boundaries – you’re…
My First Broken Bone The time I broke my first bone, I was tumbling and the event affected me greatly. It had a major impact on the way I thought and my mindset when it comes to achieving my goals. Sometimes, things happen in life that bring us down and make us doubt ourselves, but no matter what happens, we should always keep striving to reach our goals. Which is what I had to do when I was going through a rough time in tumbling. On an afternoon in June of 2011, I attended my normal tumbling class at Full FX in Port Arthur, Texas.…
