AMI 2 Final Written Assignment

In this essay I will be comparing the piece Rhythm Danse by Richard Saucedo between the Bethune Band performance at Flato – Markham Theatre on May 16th, 2016 and two other performances by other schools. I will be comparing performances by The Homestead High School Concert Band, conducted by John Weir and the 2010 GMEA District V High School Honor Symphonic Band, conducted by Wayne Markworth with Bethune’s Symphonic Band.
The first band I will be reviewing is The Homestead High School Concert Band, conducted by John Weir. The tempo was fast at around 140 beats per minute. There was not good balance at bars 19-23 because the clarinets and flutes were too loud and it was a bit hard to hear the saxophones and lower brass. In that same measure, the alto saxophones were not precise with the accents and there was no space between notes. The balance between the instruments was okay throughout the piece. In bars 23-27, the alto saxophones did not get quieter and remained the same volume throughout that section. They ignored the crescendos and dynamics. The articulation of the notes in the last two bars were a bit muffled. Bethune’s performance also had this same problem.

Their tempo was pretty fast at about 153 beats per minute. At bar 23, they did not drop their dynamic level to mezzo piano, which also did not create much more intensity in the crescendo. At bar 87, there was change in the dynamic level, but the alto saxophones completely ignored this and blocked out the other sections. I feel that this band had great intensity, however, some areas did not have a noticeable change in dynamics. I also think that the band did great with balance, phrasing and

In this essay, Gould describes the performance of "Madam Jeanette" conducted by Wilhousky. Returning to his old high school chorus after thirty years, Len and Gould reminisce in their diverse and musically-talented childhood. Comparing his chorus to the one in that time, Gould recognizes that at a young age, students cannot put the right amount of emotion into the music. Along with this, the number of male participants has dropped drastically, and try-outs may no longer be necessary as the ratio of girls to boys is outrageously uneven. With these setbacks, Gould wonders if the students have put the excellence of Wilhousky aside.…

The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…

The dynamics are much like the tempo. The dynamics go from piano to fortissimo. This shocked the audience’s nerves. They didn’t know what to expect from the dissonant notes, and how loud the music was going to be because it was constantly changing. There were many instruments used for the piece.…

I think that this song was very different from the songs we listened to in class, which was kind of neat. There wasn’t a clear rhythm of sorts to this song. I felt like a lot of different things were going on and each instrument had their own parts going on. However, it all flowed together really well. The saxophone(s) and piano played most of the choruses, and each had their own little part of a solo.…

On October 15 7:30pm , I attended the UIC theatre to listen to the Wind Ensemble, UIC orchestra and the Mariachi Fuego. The concert consisted of performers who were students from UIC. The first part of the concert, consisted of the performers playing without a conductor. They relied on each other and performed music that was based off the hispanic culture. The first part of the program consisted of a heritage type of music.…

On Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8:00 pm, I have attended a performance by Joy Harjo and her friends Mitch Taylor who played the guitar, Dave Copenhaver who played the bass guitar, and Smiling’ Vic Gutierrez who played the drums and vocals. I had specifically chose this performance to do my report on because I wanted to feel what actual Native American music would be like in concert as opposed to what we naturally think of when it comes to Native American music. For me, that would include heavy drumming and dancing, which are usually even-pulsed with a variety of vocables. Not to my disappointment, the music was unique in its own way and had spoke directly to me.…

It was very soothing and relaxing to listen to. The music that the group produced was smooth throughout the concert. In the second song, the trumpet player used the technique of covering the hole of the trumpet where the sound comes out of with his hand and it made the trumpet sound similar to the trombone. The music was smooth and slow enough that one could move to it and follow along with it.…

Overall, the dynamics were rather weak in the song filled with notes on how the piece should be sung. The tendency was for the chorus to sing the softs too loud, and the louds not loud enough. For example, in measures 15-17, the crescendo needed to be more dramatic. However, because it started off too high in volume, there was not much room for growth. Another example would be found in measures 57-64.…

On May 26, 2016, the Jazz Ensemble at Cal State La decided to have a concert called Jazz combos. The meaning behind the name was the fact that there wasn't only one Jazz band performing but in fact four groups getting to show the students including outside people their talent. The jazz ensemble combos consisted of : Faith +1, Los Nombres, Alt+f4, Something Really Meta. Each group collectively performed three to four song, 14 all together. You would think that since all of these groups would sound the same since they are all doing the same genre, but the fact that each group had their own uniqueness is what made the concert intriguing.…

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet was an exceptionally fascinating occasion. My purpose for my statement is that I have never really been to a live jazz performance and it was a new experience for me. My immediate thought upon entry was that the presentation was going be exhausting and long. In spite of the fact that it lasted quite a while it was justified regardless of my while in light of the fact that I really wound up liking the performance. I think the Brubeck Brothers Quartet was amazing and I have no feedback from the recital.…

Jazz Night Concert Report The concert that I chose to attend was Jazz Night which was held at the Arnette Scott Ward performing Arts Center on the Pecos campus. I decided to show up to this performance because I have always had an appreciation for the skill and talent it requires to play an instrument. I was pleased by the concert because I heard a wide spectrum of timbre, and I was especially thrilled because I got to hear the brassy sound given off by the trumpets. I used to be a trumpet player…

My paper’s approach to Louis Armstrong’s small band performance in Australia is organized by song. In each of these song sections, I describe what is generally going on. Intermixed amongst my musical review, I also interject my personal feelings and perceptions to what is occurring. I have organized my structure this way in order to provide a methodical structure to my analysis. Louis Armstrong starts playing the trumpet in the first song, “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South,” almost immediately after walking onto the stage.…

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…
