The poem, “For Mohammed Zeid of Gaza, Age 15,” which was written by Naomi Shihab Nye, is dedicated to Mohammed Zeid a fifteen year old boy who was killed by a “stray bullet” (Line 1). The first stanza provides illustrations and anthesis that underscore the harm of a bullet. For instance, Naomi Shihab Nye describes that “the bullet could not a pecan/ plunking the tin roof” (Line 6-7). Through the onomatopoeia of the “plunking,” she emphasizes the disregardable effect the pecan has on the tin roof. However, she describes that the “bullet could not be” something so ignorable, overlooked, and trivial. In addition, In the last stanza, I believe she reiterates “Mohammed, Mohammed” to perhaps not only highlight his name, but also raise awareness

The tone of the figurative language in this passage is unprecedentedly intense within her storyline. Her feelings of identity ambiguity, confused ambition, and longstanding perturbation are indubitably recurring and prevalent throughout the novel. However, the gunfire simile carries with it a brutality that seems out of place at this point in the plot. Prior to this passage, she finishes reading the translation of her mother’s account of her life, settles her mother’s housing, and reaches a point of harmony in her relationship with Art. These are all tangible indications that she and her family are on their way to all-inclusive peace.…

Tobias Wolff’s short story “Bullet in the brain” is written as though it was a film and this rhetorical manner evokes a visual, a sonorous, and a neurotic feeling. Yet, even though it seems like a movie, there is a realism to it. Wolff generates a sad ending from the most ordinary thing a human could be doing and this is expressed through the eyes of the story’s narrator that knows how to bring the important details to light. The point of view greatly influences the construction of the story and its meaning; by means of different stylistic approaches, the story’s point of view gradually unfolds and reveals that behind the main character’s harsh personality is hidden a sensitive side. Wolff is known to be a minimalist writer that is “concerned…

    Poem By Big Pun

This dark and aggressive song, by Big Pun, promotes the idea of revenge, retribution and ruthlessness. It includes endless lines of pure violence and harsh messages written in breathtaking poetry, that is powerful enough to completely possess an individual’s attention. Big Pun is without a doubt lyrically gifted, but the morals and ethics he is advocating are troublesome for modern society. He describes murder as something he is born to do, essentially spreading the idea that he is good at it and proud. In addition to this, he raps about emotions of remorse being a negative thing, teaching people that “feeling bad” for others is not a desirable attitude.…

Range Finding is composed of two stanzas, in which consist of unequal lines. (The first stanza consists of 8 lines, while the second stanza has 6.) This consists of 14 line breaks, individually standing alone and telling a story, yet there is no need to pause as if you were reading an end-stopped sentence. Each line Frost has written is a beautiful enjambment of its own. The overall shape of this poem is perceived from more of a conveying meaning rather than a verbal significance.…

Almost as a result of this warning, the child has effectively shot his eye out. He is holding his glasses to keep them on. A lens has been shattered and one of the temples (the piece that rests the glasses to an ear) is drooping down, broken. The young boy is looking very remorseful. The author uses logos, ethos, pathos, and kairos to show that our cultural stance on the ownership of guns needs to change.…

Not only does the idea of deceased victims sending letters to their assailants relate to an elegiac, but it also contributes to the overall theme of injustice. The assailants targeted and attacked innocent victims unjustly, and regardless of whether or not they experienced the consequences, it was an offense not worth following suit. This poem supports the author’s reflection on “The earth ticking with mines” from “Life on Mars” itself. She believes, “We’ve been riddled with bullets, shot through like ducks / Everyday. To ourselves and one another.”…

The two translations of the poem “Some People Like Poetry”, written by Wislawa Szymborska, each create the tone of the poem differently through chosen diction, including the use of repetition and speaker versus the absence, resulting in a divide of both clear and opaque meaning of the analysis Szymborska tries to convey through the process of questioning. The poem “Some People Like Poetry” is focused around the theme of questioning: not only the idea of enjoying something, but the definition of poetry itself. Szymborska grapples with the idea of the unknown as she asks rhetorical questions reflected in both translations, “But what is poetry anyway? (trans.…
