Rhonly Mccandless Analysis

I’ll never forget the time my older cousin, Ronny, told me about his plans to join the peace court instead of attending college in the fall like he intended. To be completely honest, I thought this was an irreconcilable idea. In my opinion, going to college is the most important thing. I would always think about the countless amount of risks, and that he may not come back the same intelligent, funny guy I grew up knowing. It really bothered me for some reason but I tried to keep it to myself. However I couldn’t do it anymore. I ended up telling him how I felt. He smiled, and told me not to worry. He told me how he has not been happy for a really long time and not college nor anything that does not involve helping others would. So that spring, he left. McCandless grew up in a privileged family, with many secrets. It was always hard for him and never found his purpose. So he went off, and found a deeper meaning of life like he intended. He knew that he could die and it would not be easy, but that did not matter to him. He even recommended his lifestyle to others, such as Ronald A. Franz. In McCandless’s letter to Franz, he states “Ron, I really hope that as soon as you can you will get out of Salton City, put a little camper on the back of your pickup, and start seeing some of the great work that God has done here in the American West. You will see things and meet people and there is much to learn from them” (Krakauer 58). This quote expresses how hard he worked to get the life he wanted, even with the risks in included. He loved his lifestyle so much, he persuaded this living to his best friends.
