Rhode Island Stereotypes

Within the passed few days multiple, treacherous and seemingly never ending winter storms made there way through New England. All the snow sparked hibernation but also curiosity within me. I have noticed through out the last week that even the most experienced with snow are sent into frenzy at the sight of a single snowflake. Rhode Island, although small has a huge stereotype of freaking out the second someone says “snow”, but in a very strange way. With every storm whether it be hurricane Sandy or winter storm Nemo residents of Rhode Island are said to run out and get milk and bread, but why? The milk would go bad if the storm was strong enough to knock out the power, bread is nothing with out deli meats and I do not see anyone eating milk and bread together expect for the delicacy of toast for breakfast. This bring up a question of why do us ocean state residents carry such a stereotype? I have never …show more content…
It may not impact the world in a large way but it does inspire questions.
An experiment is necessary in order to answer the question, do Rhode Island residents really travel to the market to pick up milk and bread in preparation for an up and coming storm? In this research study, the independent variable would be that there is an approaching snowstorm; the dependent would be whether or not a trip to the local market for milk and bread is taken. I hypothesize that when the weather channel says a snowstorm is expected residents in Rhode Island will stock up on bread and milk at the local market. The research design that I would select would be correlation. I would choose correlation, not experiment, because I am comparing the two variables for a relationship without altering either variable. The purpose of this lab is to examine cross sections from the leaves of C3 and C4 plants and to determine the morphological differences between them while relating those differences to their metabolism. In C3 plants the carbon dioxide is first incorporated into a 3-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place throughout the mesophyll cells. In comparison C4 plants, the CO2 is first incorporated into a 4-carbon compound. Their stomata are open during the day and photosynthesis takes place within the inner cells.…

The purpose of trying to figure out what was inside the black bottle was to understand the basic elements of the scientific inquiry process. We hypothesized that there was a push pin and string inside the unknown bottle—this was based on observations. In order to determine whether our hypothesis was correct or not, we massed out the unknown bottle, an empty bottle, and items that could potentially be inside the bottle. We also put items inside the empty bottle and compared the sound to the unknown bottle. The results showed that there were differences in sound between the unknown bottle and the empty bottle that had different items inside.…

When Anne of Green Gables begins Anne is a free spirited, adventuress, young lady, who goes against gender norms since she would rather go outside and play then stay inside and make sure the house is taken care of. As the novel continues, Anne becomes a responsible, and educated young adult. When Anne first goes to live in Green Gables, she was not what Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert expected, since they had wanted a boy to help them with the farm. Although Anne was not what they originally wanted she was the joy that they needed in life, and they were the stability that she required. Throughout the course of the novel Anne succumbs to the gender stereotype of the woman who stays home to raise her family, rather than the free spirit…

Ocean’s Eleven is one of the most popular heist Hollywood blockbusters. The movie is a remake of Lewis Milestone's film in 1960 which was also calls Ocean’s Eleven starring Frank Sinatra. Steven Soderbergh did a great job as a director in keeping the audience interested throughout the whole movie time. Although the story is quite original and non-trivial Soderbergh’s idea to combine different genres was successful. The film demonstrates its large-scale approval from an outstanding combination of strong lead and supporting actors, humorous dialogue, brilliantly incorporated musical-score and a creatively complex masterpiece of inventiveness and flawless preciseness.…

The experiment consists of two parts. First, we need to randomly select children from low income families and randomly assign them into two groups: A and B, recording their fitness like BMI data. Second, we have to manipulate one and the only one independent variable which is the presence versus the absence of exercise and measure the dependent variable which is the children’s BMI data. To be specific, we keep one group of children do exercise every day and another group be more sedentary as well as control all other conditions or variables equal. Also, to avoid the experimenter expectancy effect and the placebo effect, we should let other researchers assign the groups without knowing which one is the experimental group or control group by ourselves.…

By the time the actual storm had hit, there was a sudden change in weather that caught many new settlers by surprise. The territories were made up of large rural areas with everyone spread out miles apart from each other. Farmers were miles away from home and tending to their crops, while children were just coming home from a day at school. Because of the mild weather and bright sunshine earlier that day, many of the settlers went without wearing heavy coats or even gloves to protect them from the unexpected drop in temperatures that was about to occur. By the time the actual storm hit, there were a very limited number of places for the settlers to go.…

    Essay On Armistice Day

The Armistice Day blizzard was so strong and forceful, cars were moved and many people were injured thinking they would be safe in a sturdy vehicle. “Passenger train No. 106 coming into Minneapolis from Enderlin, N.D., overran a switch signal and collided head on with a freight train,” explained Ben Walter, a writer for the Star Tribune. While people thought they were safe in their cars or homes, they were not. And not only did it hurt people’s actual lives and their homes, but businesses and agricultural industries took a big hit. “Icy winds killed hundreds of apple trees, and planting a new orchard was expensive,” Simmons informed.…

The rabbit hunt is a crucial part of maintaining Ha-lem, the Taos practice of balance and symbiosis between the individual, the community, and the environment (Lujan 32). However, due to the visitors’ distaste, the town of Taos shunts the practice by “[pouring] poison pellets near the big hotels and houses because they wanted no blood thirsty Savages around when [were] in abundance, or because they wanted to control everything” (Mirabal, Skeleton of a Bridge 59). As Whitt says, the tourists must believe in the flat, tame, docile Native stereotype reminiscent of an outdated and romanticized Southwest as “the nostalgia is integral to the cultivation of self deception” (145). When this deception can no longer occur because the Native Americans…

I’ve up to this point been mum on the subject of your slogans for the sake of not stirring the pot, but since you asked, I find a lot of them in poor taste. There are quite a number of reasons why your shirts are problematic and I’ll try to touch on each of them. First, you claim that you see no problem with people of any race claiming and advertising themselves as being “U.S.A Natives” because the dictionary definition of the term has to do with a person’s birth country. Although this may be true, it requires that you selectively ignore both the common usage and the history of the term. As you know, commonly, “Native American” refers to someone of a particular ancestry.…
