The State: From Then To Now In the year 1776, the 13 colonies severed their ties and allegiances to the British Crown in a quest to be independence. What is unknown to most people is that, the state of Rhode Island which was then a colony as well, was the first of the 13 to do so. The colony is however, mostly known for its absence at the constitutional convention and its refusal to ratify the newly written constitution – though it eventually ratified it. Time however, has helped the state solidify its standing in the union and has seen it grow into a prosperous and strong state, resembling in many aspects its neighbors, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Rhode Island has a competitive economy which has health services and tourism as its main industries though the state and federal government as well as universities employ a high number of Rhode Islanders. The state judicial system comprises of a traffic court, workers’ compensation court, family court, district court, superior court which oversees all criminal trials and many other civil matters. Lastly, the RI Supreme Court which has a Chief Justice and 4 Associate Justices, are all selected by the Governor, serving life terms and may
