The rehearsal of actors is an essential role in any production, particularly an absurdist play due to the intricacy of characters. Characters are a combination of multi dimensional tiers in addition to being stereotypes and simplistic. Characters are defined by their functions as their responses tend to be orientated to the action of the moment oppose to already known character specific instincts. Rhinoceros adds another layer of character complexity due to the transformation into rhinos. Due to these challenges my hired actors will face, rehearsals will begin with basic techniques as actors build absurdist skills from the base upwards.
Voice exercises will be used to allow each actor to discover varying energy levels and how to deliver lines with certainty. They will become familiar with using unusual silences and pauses that are used thoroughly throughout Rhinoceros. Building on from vocal work, they will work on absurdist language which is often illogical with immediate meaning only. Actors will work on understanding and conveying philosophical and existential lines with moral certainty they may have previously lacked conviction in.
