In high school the idea of talking to the text where writing notes on the side while reading normally gave me enough information to get by. Thus never grasping the complexity of the text because the means were unknown. It was not until I was introduced to the rhetorical situation diagram in 1020. Prior to the rhetorical situation diagram we were given an assignment where we were to interpret three different viewpoints central around a single argument about oil. From prior knowledge about how to construct an argument I was to explain how the each writer proposed and sought out their argument. Because several strategies and instructional approaches are used to master the content, students feel confident with the material and sharing ideas, which promotes speaking and listening skills (3:24). This is evident at 10:18 when one student mentioned an example in Chapter 7 and asked her group members a follow-up question. This conversation continued and at 10:59 two boys share evidence from the text, showing students examine this text from multiple perspectives. At the beginning of the period, finding evidence and applying it to a claim is modeled for them as we preview the assignment (2:24). Because of a five paragraph paper I had to write in this class, I learned that writing is never as bad as I think it will be. At first, I thought IEW’s curriculum was hard and boring. Of course, as a ten year old I didn't see when I’d ever need to write a long essay about a certain topic when I could just talk about it. When I’d get sent home with a three paragraph paper on some historical topic due then next week, I didn’t ever look forward to it.…

Throughout the course of English 10803, I have come to the realization that rhetorical strategies are a crucial and valuable part of writing. During the construction of my Portfolio Four essay, I kept all that I have learned and am currently learning in my mind as I typed out each word and phrase. I feel that in order for the audience to connect to and understand my argument, I must take a wise and orderly rhetorical approach in my writing. The effective, rhetorical features within my essay include an unbiased voice, credible evidence of both sides of the argument, a direct quote, and a strong connection to all audiences.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…
