A quote that showed this parallelism is, “Doctors of preventive medicine, men at the borders who look for fruit flies, for Japanese beetle, men who quarantine the sick trees and root them out and burn them, men of knowledge” (347). This quote specifically emphasizes the importance of the men who treat and protect the trees and the produce. Steinbeck used this quote to get the point across to the reader, about the amount of knowledge that it took for the men to be able to treat the state and country, in order to prevent the bugs. Another quote that shows this parallelism is, “Little sour apples have grown large and sweet, and that old grape that grew among the trees and fed the birds it's tiny fruit has mothered a thousand varieties, red and black, green and pale pink, purple and yellow; and each variety with its own flavor” (347). This quote shows the bounty of fruit that was flourishing among the state. It also showed the joy that was once there. Steinbeck’s use of parallelism showed the dramatic detail as well as adding a sense of amazement to the Grapes of Wrath.
Steinbeck’s use of oxymorons and parallelism is extremely important to the Grapes of Wrath as is added emphasis and a sense of amazement to the reader.
