The three main recommendations to consider are the purpose, audience and genre. The different questions and strategies to practice rhetorical thinking are well explained and design to favor writers in all composition projects. To start the analysis of this chapter, I found this reading easier to digest than Lindemanns´ work (both targeting the term rhetoric). Lindemanns´ work gave me a perspective of the history and development of the rhetorical practice throughout the years but, Bean´s work taught me specific questions that I can implement in class to start helping my student´s to think rhetorically in order to improve their writing projects.…
Portfolio Assignment Throughout the Rhetorical Analysis paper that I completed for this English 101 class, I called back to many of my past experiences in high school that allowed me to interpret the meaning of the song that I decided to choose. The main skills from my past that I referenced were: my ability to comprehend text, my ability to convey a message through an essay, and my ability to view a text with an open mind. The rhetorical context found in these two messages differ in who the writer is informing, the writer’s personal or professional purpose, and the genre of the memorandum. These three factors resulted in the writing of two extremely different letters, and therefore derived contrasting feedback. An example of these three aspects working together can be found in the Associated Press article about the robotic salamander and the Pennisi reading. In the Pennisi reading, its main purpose is to be an informative piece about the similarities to their robotic salamander, to live salamanders in order to imply how water animals first began walking on land. The Pennisi reading was meant for a non-specialist audience, but also for audiences interested in science or researchers that are interested in keeping up with the topic. Looking back onto my first day off class, I realize how my knowledge has grown immensely. I am now able to take the lessons I learned in class and apply my new knowledge in all situations of writing. To begin, the class strongly focused on rhetoric, therefore, my understanding of rhetoric expanded greatly. I can now apply rhetoric strategies, such as appealing to pathos, to a variety of genres because of my experience in writing expository, persuasive, and academic pieces.
