Rhetorical And Visual Advertising

For my rhetorical and visual analysis paper, I chose to write about the visual storytelling of an art school’s ad and how it was weak in its presentation. When I decided to write my thoughts on this topic, I wanted to illustrate my professional opinion on advertising and how important it is to touch on all aspects of rhetoric when working on a visual. I also wanted to include this essay rather than my rhetorical narrative paper because I was much more passionate on the topic of analyzing this advertisement. I had much more to talk about within the analysis and found that I also cared about identifying the flaws within the ad more than I did telling a personal story. All the feedback I was given in class was incredibly helpful, as I was able to pick up on what aspects of rhetoric I was lacking in my final draft. I was told that a large piece of my paper had been missing elaboration on the ethos appeal of the poster. At the time I had chosen this topic because I was majoring in communications and had recently learned a lot about advertising and how people view the messages the company is trying to portray. The idea of reviewing a poster advertising an …show more content…
A reoccurring problem I came across was that I would constantly reuse certain adjectives to describe things. It made my papers sound repetitive and uninteresting as I went through the information I wanted to present forth. I also noticed that my writing style had become extremely formal compared to my older writing pieces from the semester before. But as I continued to write, I made a conscious effort to check for these problems and find new ways to write about these topics. The revisions I made to my papers helped to better understand my writing style and make small improvements upon it over the semester. This helped lead me to understand and complete my final portfolio and become a better writer in the

The first appeal the Shamwow commercial does not use effectively is the ethos appeal. Ethos is the appeal to credibility, an example of this would be having a recognizable person (such as someone seen on tv or another form of public exposure) present a product, and because the intended audience recognizes the figure, the audience trusts the sales pitch since they have seen them outside of the advertisement. In the Shamwow commercial, a tan, spiky-haired, salesman with a blue collared shirt stitched with the products title, introduces himself as Vince Offers of Shamwow. Offers’ own association with the company, along with the label of on his shirt, is there to convince the audience or viewers?, that because he belongs with the company (poor…

The ad I focused on that depicts the three differents types of rhetorical appeals was a public service announcement on speeding. In this speeding ad it shows two men driving. One man is turning onto a two way road and the other man is driving far over the speed limit. The man taking the turn disregards the car on the street in hopes that he has time to turn . Before the cars collide they come to a halt, and the men get out of the car to talk to each other in an attempt to prevent the crash.…

“Product Placement and Advergaming” by Michael Solomon describes how movies and video games are advertising companies’ products. Product placement had begun in the late eighteen hundreds. The purpose of product placement was to get better ways of doing advertisement on television shows and movies. It first started with movies and shows changing up the company name to something similar. With product placements happening many products were able to be sold, just like Coca-Cola being used on television shows like American Idol.…

In the Apple commercial, the audience is first introduced to a young adult in his bedroom laying in his bed late at night while highlighting the sleek matte black look of the iPhone 7 as it rests on his nightstand. The scene quickly changes as the actor grabs his skateboard and phone and skates outside in his neighborhood. As the actor skateboards through his neighborhood he squats down and skates through sprinklers while recording a video on his phone. During the next scene, the actor comes across a magnificent moment of fire flies flying around a dull light and captures the moment with a photograph on his phone. After he takes the picture the actor skates toward his next location while he witnesses the full moon as the train passes by.…

Today we live in a world full of examples, demonstrations, and subliminal messages. All these can be combined into one using media to sell products, information and security. Major corporations such as Allstate Insurance have created several catchy and convincing ads to make the person viewing consider purchasing their product. One of their latest commercial campaigns is a man whose role is to play everyday mayhem. Although mayhem can exist in many ways, it is displayed as an emotional teenager who becomes a reckless driver in a commercial I recently seen.…

During this presentation on the visual rhetoric used in the Rolex advertisement, there were numerous examples brought up. The most striking appeal of the advertisement was the bright image of the Rolex watch towards the bottom of the page. Set against a dull grey background, the watch stands out mostly due to its colors —silver and gold— which have a positive connotation. The color gold evokes thoughts of luxury, wealth and status. The ad makes the eyes travel downward, following the bolded word “Daytona”.…

Once every four years, many of the standard television advertisements are replaced with something much worse: political campaign ads. There are many different types of campaign ads. Among them are characters ads, which serve to establish the good character of a candidate, bandwagon ads, which serve to convince the public that a candidate is best choice because many other people are voting for them, and evidence ads, that use facts to convince the public that a candidate is the best choice for office. There is, however, one type of ad that sparks more controversy than any of the others, the attack ad. The attack ad seeks to dissuade voters from choosing a certain candidate by attacking their character or track record.…

The Calvin Klein Jean ad shows a half-naked man draped over half-naked women both of the oiled up and twisting around each other, conveys an implied steamy twosome. Calvin Klein is known for their quality of clothing and their high status on the fashion runway. In the ads, they are known for their edginess. They are not shy about going out of the norms when it comes to making their adverts. It all started in 1980 with the Brooke Shields (a 15 year old girl) advert in 1980, with a punch line "Nothing comes between me and my class" One would argue that even though the ad is targeting a younger demographic there still needs to be a sense of responsiveness towards proper ethics.…

The three advertisements are very much alike. They all contain the three persuasive appeals, pathos, logos, and ethos but in different ways. All the advertisements employed a labrador puppy to help establish the three different appeals. However, each advertisement used the labrador in different ways to appeal to the audience in different ways, either to be informed, persuaded, or entertained. The first advertisement, “2015 Budweiser Super Bowl commercial” attacked the audience with an immense amount of emotion.…

Before watching the documentary, my stance on advertisement to children were fairly positive. For me as long as the advertisements don’t promote sex, drugs, alcohol, or other inappropriate topics to children, advertising to them seems acceptable. In fact, last semester in one of my advertising classes, I was asked if I would be comfortable to promote McDonald’s Happy Meals to kids, knowing that the kind of food encourage kids to eat unhealthy. At that time, I didn’t feel it was unethical. I felt it was the parents’ responsibility to watch what their children eat and teach them the importance of eating healthy.…
