Benjamin Hoffman, Victor Mather, and Jacey Fortin’s article “After Trump Blasts N.F.L, Players Kneel and Lock Arms in Solidarity” features many debatable topics about the players kneeling during the National Anthem. The main cause brought up by the authors for the players kneeling includes tweets posted by Donald Trump on Twitter. One of these tweets exclaims that sports fans should “never condone” players that do not stand during the anthem and that the “NFL should change its policy” (Hoffman). Based off player responses to the tweets and interviews, the authors’ attempt to fully understand the matter of the protests allows for the use of an ethical appeal, pathetic appeal, and logical appeal. After a rhetorical analysis, the authors’ varying …show more content…
The authors’ found that these tweets were both argued against and argued for amongst viewers of the NFL, players, and politicians. After explaining and examining the comments about the protest, the authors’ use of logos appears to draw logic from the commentators instead of from themselves, and they appeared to almost have a political bias with those advocating for the support of the protest. In one tweet by the current president, he approves of “standing with locked arms” but proclaims that “kneeling is not acceptable” (Hoffman). The authors explain that President Trump sees support for the anthem as acceptable and protests against the anthem as a sin. Their use of pathos, while examining the tweet, appeals to all readers and makes an attempt to try and explain why the president would post something like this on social media. The authors try to infer that the president has no position to criticize the players’ actions, rather that he should be constructively offering solutions and offering, both those against the protests and those for the protests, valid suggestions. After reading the tweets, the players that protested were interviewed about the reasoning behind the protests and what they stood for. Many pointed out that racism and discrimination played a major role, but also President Trump’s tweets had given them more of a reason to

In the opinion article, “Colin Kaepernick Protest Has 49ers Fans Burning Their Jerseys,” Cindy Boren of the Washington Post writes that Kaepernick’s choice to not stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” sparked an uproar of controversy amongst the 49ers fans. Many fans, his teammates, and the NFL condoned his choice of action and explained that he had done nothing wrong. On the other hand, other fans voiced their opinions that he should get out of the country or show his respects if he will not stand for the national anthem. Fans who disagreed with Kaepernick’s actions showed their outrage through setting their jerseys on fire that had his number on it. They were disgusted by him not standing for the anthem and showing his pride in the United…

Normally, there is little attention given to these games because they are played with the sole purpose of evaluating the progress of players before the regular season begins. This game, however, ended up receiving worldwide attention for something that happened before the game had even started. Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Ethan Hackney Professor Aguailar ENGL V01A October 5, 2017 ENGL V01A Midterm NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the National Anthem to protest the mistreatment of African Americans has generated a good deal of controversy: some claim that the act of kneeling is a sign of disrespect and feel that Colin is not only insulting America, but also insulting the many soldiers who have died for this country, on the other hand many believe that Kaepernick’s kneel was not only a proper form of Non-violent protest, but actually a sign of reverence rather than disrespect. More NFL players have copied Kaepernick’s example in the last year, and emotions have run high on both sides of the issue, even generating a response from President…

Standing for the national anthem is merely an obligation for some while others symbolize and associate it with the sacrifices of the lives lost men and women in service, have put in creating the country we live in. As for Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback of the 49ers, standing for the national anthem represents the idea that the individual takes pride in their country. And, so, Kaepernick chose to “take a stand by kneeling” (Witts) to express his beliefs, create awareness, and protest (Fig. 1). However, his message was misinterpreted by many viewers and took it as him disrespecting veterans and their service to this country. This misinterpretation can be explained by Stuart Hall’s circuit model, a cycle that starts with production and continues to circulation, consumption, and reproduction.…

Pregame: Athletes Making Their Stand Koa Ahgeak University of Alaska Anchorage In Dave Zirin’s essay “Pregame” (Zirin, 2017), he argues that famous pro athletes are starting to realize how much of a change they can make in this world with their actions they do on or off of the court/field by making a “conscious political stand for justice,” (Zirin, 2017, p. 424). He proves his point by providing examples about the 2009 Miami Heat NBA team making a political stand for justice for a young African American teen named Travyon Martin who was shot and killed by a self appointed neighborhood watch leader because he had his hood on which “some pundits in their infinite wisdom believed made him suspicious” (Zirin, 2017, p. 424). Trump outlines the problems with the political establishment, and empowers the people to change society. He offers himself as the only candidate with the skills necessary to cut through the establishment and put an end to the status quo that is crippling America. The ad, which runs 2 minutes (rather than typical 30-60 second poli-spots), is considered a melodrama, as it prioritizes emotional reactions over detailed characterizations of the political problems facing the United States: Donald Trump: Our movement is about replacing a failed and corrupt…
