When policymakers yield to the pressure of educational lobbyist, which are heavily funded by education textbook and software makers, then the pressure is passed down the pipe until it reaches the classroom teacher. The answer to the question, “What should be the role of the 21st century teacher” is the same as it was for the first teacher, to provide a foundation which instructs students on how they should live their adult life. As stated, the role has not changed, but the methods used to effectively train students has been updated. Instead of using uniform strategies for all students, this century's effective teachers must design instruction that motivates each student by providing experiential, authentic, and challenging experiences. These teachers communicate content in such a way that students are able to comprehend based on their individual prior learning and ability (Stronge, Grant, & Xu, 2015). The use of technology and assessments equip teachers with data that can be used to individualize the learning experience of students. Effective teachers will plan lessons and learning units that give priority to the skills students will have to carry across the disciplines and into new and different jobs (Stronge, Grant, & Xu, 2015).
