“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”-André Gide. This, to me, defines the parameters in regards to a class and academic project being rewarding; it has to reach further than the surface. For something to be rewarding it has to be valuable and worthwhile. Learning something new, uncovering information untold, and discovering something because of a simple curiosity is what I truly find rewarding. Everyday I get taught something new and gain more knowledge which is extremely important. However, I’m confined to a shore: eight periods in a day where I don’t think beyond let’s say the American Civil War or a rhetorical analysis. I was dumbfounded from the opportunity to make this decision on my own; there were so many things that I wished to uncover and learn about so how could I possibly choose just one to focus on? Gratefully, this fear began to transform into excitement, even giddiness- I realised the true amount of freedom that was entrusted in me and the potential knowledge I would be able to gain from it. With this I began to commence my project on a topic I typically wouldn’t choose: the morality of genetic modifications through the use of the Crispr Cas9 system. This was entirely out of my comfort zone; the government and things of that nature is what inspires me. I mean, just by even discussing law or human rights it’s able to instantaneously wake me up and give me this immense surge of energy. Nonetheless, here I was beginning this meta-analysis on the morality of a recent biotechnology by clicking on a simple You-Tube video I found extremely interesting.
