Keds Art to Advertisement According to Ziad Abu-Saud’s article, “The Dogma of Advertising and Consumerism,” featured in the Huffington Post, we are exposed to between two hundred and fifty and three thousand advertisements a day. What are advertisements and what makes a good advertisement? Advertisements are pictures, commercials, and posters that promote a product and consumerism, the increase of consumption of goods. Good advertisements contain things that first catch the reader’s attention. Next, focus and appeal to an ethnicity, age group, and gender. Last, advertisements can use celebrities as highly influential selling points. This involves statistics, logical support, and organization. The Keds advertisement does not directly appeal to logic and reason. Although, pathos is exemplified on the website listed on the bottom of the advertisement. On the website the numbers for the project are given. These numbers are the statistical evidence that supports Pathos. On Bravehearts.com you can shop, check out Taylor Swift’s project, and build your confidence. When looking at the “Brave Life Project” page it gives a short overview of what this project is for. The “Brave Life Project” is for giving young girls the opportunity to achieve their future career goals by giving out grants. Propaganda is commonly misinterpreted for being manipulative. In reality propaganda is informative and sometimes seen as misleading. Propaganda techniques are used in many different types of advertisements. The propaganda techniques used in the Keds advertisement are testimonial and plain folks technique. Testimonial technique is the use of a celebrity within an advertisement. Testimonial technique is very commonly used. This is clearly used in the Keds advertisement because Taylor Swift’s picture is a main focal point on the advertisement. Plain folks technique is the use of “I am just like you” theory. This is exemplified in the Keds advertisement because Taylor Swift is wearing the same clothes that young girls would be purchasing, therefore she is saying “I am just like you” because I wear the same clothes and shop in the same
