Bruce Ballenger argue in his essay that students focus mostly on the conventions than the writing itself. The author effectively persuades the audience to recognize the conventions through emotions and credibility.
Bruce Ballenger, is a college professor who teaches english at a university. He explains an experience about his eighth teacher, Mrs. O’Neill, who hammered into her students the importance of good grade. This strengthens his reputation by the use of his own experience in writing ,as well as, mentions his own experiences with harsh english teachers. His audience is focused on other teachers who require essays, students and any individuals who reads his essay. His credibility is strengthened through the use of professional writers and experiences of that relate to poor writing or strict grading.In additon, because he is an english teacher and discuess other professions, who we can asume are also educators requiring writing assignements in their course materical, his paper is more valid. The text he uses is sophisticated yet understandable in a way that becomes informative and empathetic. Although his tone could both strength his paper and word choice because he tends to lead towards an towards an informal tone which makes it difficult to follow his reasoning and believe he is a professional; this also allows students to relate to the lack of conventions. He triggers the emotions of other teaches by sharing experiences through grading papers and being a student who writes and receives the graded paper right away. His example about Mrs. O’Neill allows the audience to relate and empathize through the stresses and pressure of writing “the perfect paper” in a course.
