Purpose
Waleed Aly's speech 'ISIL is Weak' explains to the viewers of The Project that we need to come together as one, against the prevailing threat of the terror attacks currently sweeping the world, and more specifically the terror attack in Paris. Waleed Aly tells us that ISIL is weak and if we come together as one and create awareness, because coming together as one, is what ISIL doesn't want. Aly is persuading the audience to ignore their propaganda because it's what ISIL doesn't want. He makes it very clear that the only purpose of ISIL's propaganda is to get us to fear them.
Issues
Waleed Aly's 'ISIL is Weak' speech reflects upon global, cultural and social issues with main focus of the division of us and them. The fear of WWIII has increased the Islamphobia and xenophobia surrounding foreigners and anything to do with ISIL, globally. This is due to lack of understanding of Islam's culture and religion. Waleed Aly tells the audience that many people are not aware that they are actually helping ISIL. Aly relates to the audience by using language such as "I'm angry" , "I'm sickened" and "I'm crushed" to show his personal view, not just what is read from a script. Aly refers to ISIL as "bastards" and suggests that their ideas are "stupid and blood-curling in its barbarity" this language is uncivilised and inhumane is degrading ISIL making them seem weak. Nearing the end of the speech Aly says "If you are a member of parliament...you're helping ISIL" and "Or whether you're just someone with a Facebook...you're just helping ISIL". Aly uses repetition to get across to the audience that we should being coming together because it's exactly what ISIL doesn't
